Dave: Sooners need to pound Longhorns with a strong run game to be Big 12 Champions

by

The Sooner defense had a lot to do with the win at West Virginia last Saturday night.

Two scoop and score turnovers made up for two Kyler Murray turnovers and Oklahoma came out on top in a wild 59-56 win in Morgantown. Credit where credit is due. Those defensive scores were big.

If they could just come up with a few more stops on a more consistent basis, this team would be unbeatable because I don’t think anyone can stop this offense from scoring in at least the 40’s. And that includes Alabama.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves. I hope the team isn’t listening to all this playoff scenario crap. It means nothing unless they can win the Big 12 Title this coming Saturday.

Big 12 Championship kickoff: 11 am Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

I know in the past I have said the Big 12 Title game is stupid when you don’t have divisions and every team already plays every other team. And I still think that. A round robin was played and Oklahoma has the best record in the Big 12. They should already be Big 12 Champions in this format.

But I will admit the Sooners need the title game this year if they hope to get in the College Football Playoff. With Oklahoma being ranked 5th and as either Alabama or Georgia are guaranteed to lose because they play each other, the Sooners would move to the 4th spot. (In reality we would need Alabama to win because if they somehow lose, you know the committee will keep them in at the 4 spot, which to me is ridiculous, but that’s another issue).

But in a year that Oklahoma didn’t have the Big 12 Title game as the so called 13th data point, the committee would absolutely jump Ohio State over the Sooners.

Hell, they might do it even if we win the Big 12 Title game.

I’m already seeing articles again espousing the idea that Oklahoma has no defense and Ohio State is a more complete team. This might be true in the sense of being a more balanced team in terms of offense and defense. But Oklahoma would be favored over Ohio State on a neutral field.

Oklahoma would be favored on a neutral field against anyone except Alabama and Clemson.

This all means nothing unless we can beat the longhorns. texas…man I still hate those bastards.

And make no mistake about it. Oklahoma is the last team Alabama or Clemson want to see in a playoff. But again, we are getting ahead of ourselves.

This all means nothing unless we can beat the longhorns. texas…man I still hate those bastards.

I think the Sooners will be fired up to avenge the only loss they had this year. Against their hated rival. But to do it, we really have to play a different game than earlier this year.

I think we have to pound the ball with the run game. Wear down that defensive line.

The Sooners have averaged over 300 yards rushing a game since the Cotton Bowl. We have to do that again this Saturday. That of course opens the passing lanes and controls the time of possession which protects the defense from being on the field too much.

And if it were me I would bring the house to Ehlinger on every single play. Yes he is going to burn you over the top a few times. But if you drop into coverage he will pick you apart on the slants and the QB run game and score anyway. Make him uncomfortable.

Ehlinger is a gamer. A tough competitor. But like any quarterback he doesn’t like pressure. He will make mistakes. Make him think about it every play. If we can make Ehlinger uncomfortable, we can win.

As we have shown, we are capable of winning a shootout. But it would be nice if we could hold texas in check offensively so our offense has some room for error.

The Worry Meter is spiking at 90% this week.

They got the Golden Hat from us this year. Let’s not let them have two trophies at our expense. With all that being said….BOOMER!!!  – Dave
