Dave: Key for Sooner’s is a run game against Texas

by

Baylor sure does play dirty.  How does our player go out of bounds on the Baylor sideline and somehow come out of the pack without his helmet?  And did you see their running back? He doesn’t stiff arm. He just throws punches when a defender gets near him.

I can tell you they get it from their head coach Matt Rhule.  He doesn’t have the best of sideline temperament and I’m sure that rubs off on his team.

Remember the penalty he got for unsportsmanlike conduct late in the fourth quarter? He thought that the hit on his quarterback was somehow roughing the passer.  To his credit he did say after the game he watched the tape and said it was a clean hit. It did look vicious as the Baylor quarterback’s head snapped back very hard.

What I want to know is why were they even trying to convert a fourth down and ten at their own thirty five yard line with only about four minutes left and down 30 points?  What’s to gain? The game is over.

Since Anderson went down, our run game has really taken a hit.

All he succeeded in doing was to get his quarterback hurt. He could have lost him for the year.

That aside, the win over Baylor just re-affirms that we have a great offense and a mediocre defense. That’s just who we are and who we have been the past several years.

However there is one thing that is starting to concern me about the offense.  Since Anderson went down, our run game has really taken a hit.

Now of course you would expect the running game to suffer some after losing a player of Anderson’ caliber. But with all the talent we have at running back, I would have thought that we would be doing better than we are.

Beat Texas!

I know we are still averaging almost 50 points a game, but that has been against less than stellar defenses.

We will need that run game to start producing much more when we start going up against teams that can play us more straight up. Teams that can rely on four down lineman to stuff the run and commit more to defending our receivers.

That’s what we will face this weekend at the Cotton Bowl in the Red River Shootout? Showdown? Rivalry?…I’m not sure what it’s called anymore. texas…man I hate those bastards.

But they will have the best defense that we will have seen thus far. They won’t stuff the box to stop the run.

They will want to play us straight up and be able to focus on covering our wide outs. We have to make them respect our running game to loosen up the back end for the big pass plays OU has become accustom too.

This could be Texas’ problem.

If we can run effectively on this defense, we will score a lot of points. And in my opinion, we saw a better offense in Baylor than what texas will put on the field at the Cotton Bowl.

Ehlinger has shown he can make plays scrambling and can throw well enough. But in games that go into the fourth quarter, he tightens up and makes mistakes.

I have been more impressed with the Baylor quarterback than I have been with Ehlinger.

texas does have big wide receivers, just like Baylor and Iowa St., and that will be an issue. However, I think Tre Brown coming back healthy helped in the Baylor game and will be vital this Saturday.

Oh how I long for the good old days of 63-21 and 55-17 Sooner beat downs.  But in the last five games OU has been the favorite and texas has covered the spread in all those games, and won in upsets twice.

So the Worry Meter is spiking at 95%. The Golden Hat is up for grabs again. Let’s keep it in Norman where it belongs.

With all that being said….BOOMER!!!  – Dave
