Don’t expect Baylor to just lay down
The game against Tulane went just about how I thought it would. Coming off a huge win against Ohio St. and playing against an option/wishbone hybrid attack that you might see once every three or four years was a recipe for a sluggish start.
The Green Wave came out and drove the field on us three times until Motley’s interception return for a touchdown finally woke the Sooners up. From there on out it was smooth sailing as talent won over and Mayfield and the boys carved up the Wave for a 56-14 victory.
Oddly that wasn’t enough to keep OU from falling to #3 from #2 in the AP poll.
Don’t get me wrong. Clemson probably should be ahead of us. They’re the defending National Champions and went on the road twice to beat the #13 and #14 teams in the country. That probably trumps our one road win against #2 Ohio St., barely.
What I don’t get is Alabama still being ranked #1. What have they done to keep that ranking? They played Florida State on a neutral field and then Fresno St. and Colorado St. both at home. And while they won those games, I wouldn’t say they were extremely impressive in any of them.
And have you noticed that Alabama is too scared to play any good power five teams outside of conference in a home and home series?
Oklahoma has played home and homes against Florida St., Ohio St., Notre Dame, Tennessee and Miami in the last ten years. Saban won’t touch a home and home outside of conference. They play all these season opening one shot neutral site games.
I guess he doesn’t have the guts to face a non-conference power five team on their home turf. Just something to think about.
SOONERS DROP TO NO. 3 IN AP POLL
As I see it, after the first three weeks of the season it should be 1. Clemson, 2. Oklahoma and 3. Alabama. But of course I’m forgetting the SEC propaganda that is good for a couple bumps up in the polls. That must be it.
Moving on, Oklahoma begins Big 12 play this Saturday in Waco against the Baylor Bears. Baylor’s rebuilding project after Art Briles scandal filled regime is going slow. They come into Saturday 0-3 against some less than stellar competition. I mean Liberty, UTSA and Duke aren’t exactly gridiron greats.
However there have been a couple of bright spots. Back up QB Zach Smith, now the starter going forward, threw for three touchdowns against Duke. Two of them were for 70 plus yards to rising star WR Chris Platt.
Baylor also gets 1,000 yard RB Terence Williams back this week from injury along with two defensive backfield players who also missed the first three games of the season.
So the Sooners can’t just role their helmets out on the field and expect a win. The Bears have big play potential. And football games can turn on one or two plays.
Oklahoma needs to bring all they have to make sure and put the Bears down early and keep them down the whole night. So the Worry Meter is at 35% this week. There is no reason OU shouldn’t dominate this game. But Baylor isn’t going to just give it to them.
With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
