The Sooners are who they are. About a top 15 to 20 team who will compete in a weak Big 12 and might even win it with some luck.
That’s the ceiling right now. They don’t belong on the same field with the Ohio States and Alabamas of the world. That much was evident when a very young and inexperienced Buckeye team took OU to the woodshed a few Saturdays ago.
Oh some people will tell you that the Sooners just made too many mistakes and they aren’t that far off blah, blah, blah. Nope. Not gonna fall for it. Ohio St. dominated and it wasn’t close. They had by far the better team that night.
Remember when OU was unbeatable on Owen Field? Those were the days. They are who they are for now. And it’s about players and coaching. We need better players and arguably better coaching.
The better players are on the way if the 2017 recruiting class stays intact. But it will need to be followed up with great classes in 2018 and 2019 to get back to the early 2000s dominance all Sooner fans hope for.
As far as coaching? Who knows. I think Stoops is a great coach. But I don’t think he is going to make any significant staff changes to his “Friends and Family Plan” he’s got going on in Norman now. He’s grown too comfortable with his 5 million plus salary and his giant mansion to shake anything up beyond a few assistants here and there.
Maybe I’m wrong and I will be glad if I am. But I don’t think OU wins another National Title under Bob Stoops.

I know he dumped Heupel a few years back, but it seems that was probably the wrong coordinator to look at. But his brother is the other coordinator so….
And the current administration isn’t going to put any pressure on him as long the stadium is full. Maybe I’m wrong and I will be glad if I am. But I don’t think OU wins another National Title under Bob Stoops.
Anyway, there is still the Big 12 Title to chase and it starts this Saturday against TCU in Ft.Worth. I think these teams are very even in talent. Kenny Hill, the new Horned Frog quarterback is getting better and better with every game. And it’s not like he didn’t have experience to begin with as he was the starter at Texas A&M before losing his spot and transferring. Kind of parallels Baker’s situation.
It does help that Turpin probably won’t play for the Horned Frogs, but this is still a very tough Big 12 opener for the Sooners. And the fact it’s on the road will of course be a big advantage for TCU.
As such the Worry Meter is spiking at 90% this week. Lose this one, and it’s the worst start to a season of the Stoops era.
Think about that considering all the preseason hype. With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
