Great Sooner win over Baylor, but was the Playoff Committee watching at all?

by

DAVES-LOGO-copyI guess there are some stories floating around that Art Briles may have said something less than flattering to Bob Stoops during their post game hand shake. So called “insiders” have said that is the case, but will not elaborate.

Wouldn’t surprise me. Arrogant prick. At his post game press conference he couldn’t bring himself to congratulate the Sooners. Closest he got to any praise for OU was saying that OU was a “good team but we made too many mistakes and they got out of here with a win.” Translation: “I don’t want to give OU any credit, we lost the game, OU didn’t win it.”

You know, sometimes that is the case. But not this time Art, and you know it. The Sooners came out with a chip on their shoulder and after Baylor’s first drive, punched the Bears in the mouth.

Whenever Baylor threatened to take the lead, the Sooners answered. And boy are the excuses coming out now. “Well, that was our back up quarterback.” That’s a very different story than what I heard before the game. All I heard from Baylor fans and Briles himself was that Stidham was ready. He isn’t your normal freshman back up. He enrolled in January and knows the offense. The offense won’t skip a beat. He’s better than Russell…and on and on. Whatever.

The Sooners beat a 6th ranked Baylor team on the road handing them their first loss in 20 home games. Great win. That is unless you are a member of the College Football Playoff Committee. Once again their rankings are continuing to show a clear bias against the Big 12.

To me it’s unfathomable that Iowa is ranked ahead of Okie St. For that matter I don’t think they should be ranked ahead of OU, but I understand that OU has one loss and Iowa is undefeated, so I can let that one slide. But ranked ahead of OSU? There is no logic to it. OSU beat the tar out of then 8th ranked TCU with a healthy Boykin. Iowa has no where near a quality win like that one.

And Jeff Long, Playoff Committee spokesman continues to spout the company line. “Iowa is ranked so high because they are a solid consistent team on both sides of the ball. They aren’t flashy, but they are consistent.”

Again, this is the committee basically saying they value Iowa’s wins over OSU’s because they think Iowa and the Big 10 and SEC play defense and the Big 12 doesn’t. That some how a 10-6 win over Wisconsin is better than a 49-29 win over TCU. But they don’t want to look at the fact that the top Big 12 defenses have a better points given up per possession then the SEC or the Big 10.

Great win. That is unless you are a member of the College Football Playoff Committee. Once again their rankings are continuing to show a clear bias against the Big 12.

They just want to look at the end score and yardage and not take into account that while Iowa may have defended 55 plays in a game, OSU would have ended up defending 95 plays in a game. It’s ridiculously short sighted for people who are supposed to be experts in college football.

And don’t get me started about how they are protecting Alabama. In last weeks poll, Ole Miss was unranked. Saturday, TCU played and beat Kansas. I know it wasn’t pretty because Boykin got hurt and missed most of the game. But they won. Ole Miss did not play. TCU, who again won their game, DROPPED three spots in the poll.

Ole Miss who SAT AT HOME AND WATCHED TV went from being unranked to rising to #22 in the poll.

It’s almost as if they said, “Wait, who dropped Ole Miss out? We have to get them back in too make sure Alabama’s loss to them doesn’t look so bad.”

And have you noticed that TCU, originally ranked #8 in the first poll, after just one loss and just two weeks is now behind four teams with two losses?!?.

What does the Big 12 have to do? Texas Tech went on the road to Arkansas and beat the SEC. Oklahoma went on the road to Tennessee and beat the SEC. If you want to go back a few years, OU beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and when two Big 12 teams, Missouri and Texas A&M joined the SEC they were instantly successful. That’s because the SEC can’t handle the spread offenses!

Phrynosoma_cornutumOk. This week’s rant is over. Moving on to OU vs the Horned Frogs this Saturday night. This one comes down to if Boykin plays and is healthy. If he plays, this is a nail biter and the Worry Meter is at 85%. If he’s out, the Sooners win comfortably and the Worry Meter is at 10%.

Boykin is that good. He is a game changer. Just look at how they played against Kansas after he left the game. Unlike Baylor, TCU doesn’t have anyone ready for a big time game at quarterback after Boykin.

I would say that it would look like a much better win against TCU if Boykin plays. But the Playoff Committee had already weighed in on how they will judge the Big 12, so it probably doesn’t matter.

With all that being said…BOOMER!!!

Dave

P.S. I’m not hating on Iowa. They are just playing the schedule in front of them and winning. It’s the Playoff Committee that’s screwed up. But for the record, in my opinion, Iowa gets RUN on a neutral field against OU or Okie St.
