OU vs TCU: Knight’s game to step up

by

DAVES-LOGO-copy One man goes down, another steps up. And in this case he stepped up in a major way.

Samaje Perine was the hero with a herculian effort against the Mountaineers. When you read the stats for Perine it’s hard not to get excited at what the future may hold for the true freshman from Pflugerville, Texas. 244 yards and 4 touchdowns. And no, that’s not stats from the last time you hooked up Playstation.

Perine and the offensive line just took it too West Virginia and never let up. This OU offense is quickly being defined by its punishing offensive line and running game. And it’s a good thing too. The air attack is still trying to find itself. Knight still has trouble looking past his primary target and can have trouble with his accuracy.
But with the running game clicking along like it is, Trevor still has room for error. However that won’t last long. Much stiffer competition is right around the corner, and its name is the TCU Horned Frogs.

Expect TCU to load up in the middle and try to stuff the run. Trevor should have opportunity to roll out and make plays with his arm and his feet.

This Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth OU will face the best defense it will see all year outside the post-season. Gary Patterson’s teams have always been known for their defensive prowess and this year is no different. Even without 2012’s Big Twelve Defensive Player of the Year DeVonte Fields, who left the team after being accused of sexual assault, the Horned Frogs are nasty on the defensive side. They have only given up 21 points in their first three games.

Now of course that has been against less than stellar competition, but impressive all the same. And Boykin at quarterback is becoming more solid and can make plays with his feet. He also has some legitimate receivers to throw too.

In the past mobile quarterbacks have given OU’s defense fits. The Sooners may have to expand the offense this week to get the victory. And this may include Knight keeping the ball and making plays with his feet.

trevor-knight_vadapt_955_medium_0In the first four games Stoops has put the clamps on Knight running the ball for fear of injury. The read option was open all night for Knight to run wild on West Virginia. Luckily Perine was running so well, there was no need to expose Knight.

But at some point he will have to turn Knight loose, and it may be this Saturday.

Expect TCU to load up in the middle and try to stuff the run. Trevor should have opportunity to roll out and make plays with his arm and his feet.

There’s alot on the line in every game this year due to this team’s high expectations. They can’t afford to hold anything back now that we are in conference play. This all adds up to a worry meter spiking at 95% this week. And I don’t see it coming down anytime soon. With all that being said….BOOMER!!!  — Dave
