Beware the David and Goliath story at Tulsa

by

DAVES-LOGO-copyCool weather can’t get here soon enough. Man it was hot in the stands Saturday. Especially if you were like me and had seats on the east side. The only thing that made it bearable was of course watching the Sooners in a solid win to kick off the season.

Nothing fancy as I would be surprised if Josh turned past page one in the playbook. Trevor Knight managed the offense well with some nice passes to Shepard, who is easily the most valuable player on the offense.

That’s not to say Knight or the running backs aren’t pulling their weight. In fact, this trio of backs has the potential to be the best group that Stoops has ever had. They have a chance to do something special this season.

The one thing that concerns me is a second wide receiver stepping up and taking pressure off Shepard. If someone jumps in and becomes a legitimate deep threat…look out.

All in all it was a solid win over an outmatched opponent. Knight didn’t need to do much. He was a little behind on a few passes and still targets his first receiver too much rather than relaxing and going through his progressions. But hopefully that will come in time. We have to remember this was only the sixth start of his career.

I would like to say that he has another week of taking it easy, but the Sooners need to be wary of Tulsa this Saturday.

Yeah, I know. It’s only Tulsa. But look again. Their quarterback threw for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns in a double overtime win against Tulane. They have some solid receivers and they are on a high after last week. And if there is a weakness in our defense, it’s in the back end.

The Hurricane have nothing to lose. They are supposed to be beat handily by OU. That’s exactly what their coaches are telling them. They are telling them the David and Goliath story. They are telling them its time to shock the world. They will play loose and with no fear.

And it’s not like Tulsa hasn’t had success against the Sooners. Oklahoma is 18-7-1 against the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa by far has a much better winning percentage against OU than the pokies do. (Just who is the second best team in Oklahoma?).

So the Sooners need to jump on Tulsa and never let up. Don’t ever let them think they have a chance. Because if OU takes this game lightly, the season will take a dramatic turn for the worse.

That’s why the Worry Meter is at 51% this week. I expect another solid Sooner victory. But Tulsa will have something to say about that.

With all that being said…BOOMER

Dave
