It’s finally almost here. Another glorious season of Sooner football! It’s been a rough past month. But in the end, what will happen will happen and you just strap on the helmets and play ball. And that of course, is what we are all looking forward to. But to begin with, as this is my first article since before last season’s Bedlam game, I want to offer my thoughts on how the year year wrapped up with the Bedlam Bell and Sugar Bowl trophies neatly tucked away in the trophy case.
Now if you want to talk Sooner Magic let’s talk the Sugar Bowl…
Now if you want to talk Sooner Magic let’s talk the Sugar Bowl…
Let’s start with the cowpukes in Stillwater. Now, I heard a lot of talk about Sooner Magic after that contest. And to be fair, it was very impressive how our boys drove the field in under two minutes to win the game with our third quarterback of the game.
But make no mistake about it. That WAS NOT Sooner Magic. That was what was supposed to happen! That was the natural order of things! That was what has happened over 80 percent of the time in a series that dates back over a hundred years! It’s what every sane poke fan knows will almost always happen! Even in a year when the game was in Stillwater. Even when osu was ranked 6th in the country and playing for an outright Big 12 title. Even on Senior day with 14 senior starters on the field.
Even with the pokes being double digit favorites on their stupid east/west home turf. Yes, even with OU having to play THREE different quarterbacks in the game, and play without six starters they had lost since game one.
Yes friends, even with all those advantages, Mike Gundy once again wet his pants and did his part to uphold the order of the universe. So don’t call it Sooner Magic. Don’t even call it the poke choke. Just call it what it was. It was simply what was supposed to happen.
Now if you want to talk Sooner Magic, let’s talk the Sugar Bowl. Even the most optimistic die hard fan could not have seen that coming. I went into that game just wanting a good showing, but I never expected a win. Boy were we all wrong! After the Sooners let Alabama drive the field for a touchdown in what seemed like five seconds, everything changed. Play after play OU took it to the Tide and never let up.
The Sooners got after Bama’s big slow offensive line and sacked McCarron seven times. Let that sink in. SEVEN times! They had only allowed 10 sacks all season coming into the game. And even when Bama fought back and threaten to tie the score in the second half, OU always had an answer.
Now Nick Saban would have you believe that it was hard to motivate his team to play in the game since it wasn’t for the national title. That the team didn’t really have anything to play for. What a crock of whiny crybaby bull****.

Knight’s 3rd and 15 pass to Bester for 1st and goal. Shortly followed by a beautiful out of the pocket, across the body, against the grain touchdown pass to Shepard. And in the end, on the Tide’s final desperate drive to tie the game, Striker beats all-everything Kouandjio for a final sack and fumble that was scooped up by Grissom for a touchdown. By the way, Striker beat that guy all night and was held almost every time.
That my friends is what I call Sooner Magic…..or maybe not. Maybe OU was just the better team. Maybe they beat Alabama silly because they out played, out hustled and out executed them all night.
Now Nick Saban would have you believe that it was hard to motivate his team to play in the game since it wasn’t for the national title. That the team didn’t really have anything to play for. What a crock of whiny crybaby bull****. Really Nicky? Your team comes out and scores in 4 plays and then intercepts a pass on OU’s first possession.
I guess those were signs your team wasn’t motivated for the game? It was hard to motivate them for a BCS bowl in the middle SEC country matching up two of the top five greatest college football programs in the history of the sport?
And if they really weren’t motivated, who’s fault was that? Surely not the almighty Nick Saban! Tide fans should be sickened if Saban let players participate in that game if he knew they didn’t want to be there representing their university. This excuse making along with his lobbying to change the rules that allow up-tempo offenses to, you know, run their offense has made me lose what little respect I ever had for that guy. “My defense can’t stop the up tempo offenses…(sniffle)…change the rules so I can win!…(sobbing)…Don’t you know who I am?!?!…” So I’m going to go with there was no Sooner Magic at all last season.
Oklahoma won both those games because they were the BETTER TEAM. No magic was needed. (FYI: Stoops is now 12-3 vs osu and 3-0 against Alabama. As I said, no magic needed).
Anyway, time to move forward and kick off the 2014 season as the Sooners welcome Skip Holtz and his Louisiana Tech Bulldogs to Owen Field Saturday night. Tech is coming off a 4-8 season with 13 returning starters. They have a strong stable of running backs and decent wide receivers.
With talk of Iowa transfer Cody Sokol taking snaps from center, Tech looks to be improved on offense this year. And remember former texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz? He has landed in the same position with the Bulldogs. He inherits a strong secondary, but must rebuild the d-line. Tech has good athletes. But they should be no match for the Sooners in the home opener.
That being said, OU just can’t roll their helmets on the field and expect to win. They need to look at this game as the first opportunity to continue to show everyone that the Sugar Bowl was not a fluke and they are National Title contenders this year. I think they will. That’s why the worry meter is only at 10% for the season opener. The Sooners will take care of business and kick off what we all hope will be the drive to number 8. With all that being said…..BOOMER!!!! — Dave
