Dave: Look out – ‘horns are wounded animals

by

OU vs. TCU That was too close for comfort.  But in the end the Sooners gutted out a tough win against a very good defensive team in TCU.

In fact, outside of a bowl game, TCU has the best defense that OU will see the rest of the year.  But the victory came at a steep price.  Corey Nelson is arguably the best defensive player we have.  TCU couldn’t sniff a first down much less a touchdown for over half the game.  But when Nelson got hurt the OU defense became disjointed and TCU took advantage to the tune of 17 points.

davesworrymeterlogoIt took two Blake Bell bulldozing first downs to finally run out the clock on the Horned Frogs.

Red River Rivalry — But a win is a win and now it’s texas week.  texas….man I hate those bastards.  It has given me such joy the past few years to see the struggles that have come out of the 40 acres.  Which of course have been punctuated by the beat downs the Sooners have administered in the Cotton Bowl.

Another variable to throw into the mix is desperation.  texas is like a wounded animal backed into a corner.  They know another loss to OU ends Mack’s coaching days.

But you know me, I’m a worrier.  Everything I hear from the fans and the media about a third straight shellacking has me very nervous.

People are not taking into account what the loss of Corey Nelson might do to OU.  As mentioned, TCU’s offense started scoring once Nelson went down.  Nelson was integral in getting the defense in the right calls and formations.  That alone will be big shoes to fill and it doesn’t even take into account the playmaking ability Nelson brought to the table.

soonerguys-game-logoAdd to this the possible loss of Jordan Phillips and now you’re looking at a weakness up the middle.  All texas really has is Jonathan Gray and the straight ahead run game.  If they can get that going, it will loosen things up for McCoy.  And in case anyone hasn’t noticed, this OU offense is not built for 60 point blowouts.  Landry isn’t out there slinging the ball 50 times a game and leading scoring drives of 2 minutes each.

This year’s offense is about running the ball and controlling the clock.  Which I think is great, but it’s not a recipe for hanging half a hundred by half time.

Another variable to throw into the mix is desperation.  texas is like a wounded animal backed into a corner.  They know another loss to OU ends Mack’s coaching days.  They also know that a loss most likely ends any hope of a Big XII title.

This was supposed to be the year texas came back to being a player on the national stage. Everything is almost gone and another loss to OU puts the final nail in the coffin.  I would expect them to come out fighting and pulling out all the stops.  Trick plays, dirty plays, and possibly a package with their freshman phenom QB  Swoopes.

The Sooners have to come out with more fight and more intensity than they have all year.  Because losing  to a texas team of this quality would be unacceptable.  The very possibility of losing to a texas team this bad is why the worry meter is at 90% this week.

If OU gets up by a couple of scores early, I think texas folds.  But the more the Sooners let them hang around, this could be a dogfight.  With all that being said….BOOMER!!!!   — Dave.

P.S. The fact that Mike Davis is not suspended for at least the first half of this game is a joke.  The fact that Mack Brown actually defended him is a bigger joke.  Seems to be plenty  of jokes coming out of Austin the past few years.
