Texas coach Mack Brown fired the Longhorns defensive coordinator a day after his team allowed the most rushing yards in its history in a loss to BYU.

Manny Diaz was replaced on Sunday by Greg Robinson, the former Texas co-defensive coordinator for the 2004 Rose Bowl team.  Robinson had been working as analyst for the program, after unsuccessful coaching stints elsewhere.  Robinson will replace Diaz for the remainder of the season. He was scheduled to join the team Sunday night.

Brown’s move came after a 42-20 loss to BYU in Provo — only the second game of the season.  It was an embarrassing loss, since many national sports media had predicted a strong year for the Longhorns, who returned 19 starters from last year’s 9-4 team.  Texas tumbled out of the AP Top 25 as a result.

The Cougars had lost their opener 19-16 to Virginia.  But against Texas, BYU rushed for  550 yards yards and accumulated 676 yards total offense.

Texas plays Mississippi, which cracked the AP Top 25 on Sunday.

“Our performance on defense last night was unacceptable, and we need to change that,” Brown said in a statement. “He will be running our defense immediately. We’re very fortunate that Greg has been around, watched all of our practice video and has a good scouting report moving forward.”
