Dave is cautiously optimistic, but watch out for WVU

DAVES-LOGO-copyThe win last Saturday over Louisiana-Monroe was a really good start to what may be a resurgence in Oklahoma football.

I know it sounds funny that a program who won a share of the Big XII Championship last year needs a resurgence, but it does.  With a program like Oklahoma you are expected to compete for a National Title almost every year.  Not just a league title.  League titles should almost be a given.

With a program like Oklahoma you are expected to compete for a National Title almost every year.  Not just a league title.  League titles should almost be a given.

But since the 2008 National Title game OU has not been a factor in the National Title discussion, at least not deep into the year. They fell into complacency in many areas.  Stoops recognized this and cleaned house.  Several coaches lost their jobs to make way for new blood to hopefully bring back a hungry and aggressive program that wants more than just a share of a league title.

I think we may have seen the beginnings of that knew attitude last Saturday.

Offense, defense and special teams all played with an enthusiasm that I think has been lacking the past few years.  Granted, Trevor Knight and the offense took some time to get on track, but the new found ground game along with Knight’s running ability showed great promise.

While I do realize Knight needs to step up the passing game, he didn’t exactly get much help from his receivers early on.  And he did end up throwing for 3 touchdowns.  For his first start, I’ll take it.  He will get better.

And the defense!  There was actually a defense for OU on the field!  With linebackers!  Real linebackers!  D-line getting to the QB!  Interceptions!  Punishing hits!

Oh my!

Seriously though….It was a very encouraging first game.  But there is no time to go patting each other on the back.  Big XII play starts early this year as West Virginia visits Owen Field this Saturday night.

It’s hard to figure the Mountaineers after one game.  Surely they aren’t as bad as they looked against William and Mary.  Are they?  One would think that Dana Holgerson didn’t go past page one of the playbook in his team’s 24-17 beat down of that gridiron power house….William and Mary.  Did he?

Regardless, OU has to be relieved they won’t be seeing Geno Smith, Stedman Bailey and he who shall not be named (Tavon Austin) on the other sideline before kickoff.

Even so, West Virginia should not be taken lightly.  As such the worry meter is at 50% this week.  If William and Mary can stay within a touchdown of the Mountaineers, surely OU beats them comfortably.  Don’t they?

With all that being said…..BOOMER!!!  — Dave
