I really would have prefered that we beat the pokies by 50 points. But I have to admit that to win on the last play in overtime was pretty cool due to the celebration that ensued. It was just a great moment for the players and the fans alike, especially on Senior Day.
Apparently Joseph Randle of osu took it to mean something else. Here is what Randle said in an interview with SI.com: “They should have been celebrating. You should celebrate when you get lucky. We feel like they got lucky….”
Randle went on to say the way the Sooners celebrated “means that they felt like they should have lost coming into the game. You know, regardless of the rankings and all of that different stuff, they didn’t think they was going to come in there and blow us out. I guarantee you that. We felt like we was going to blow them out, honestly. I felt like it was going to be easy…”.
Boy oh boy. Where to begin. First off I will admit our defense still leaves much to be desired, even though in the fourth quarter they bowed up and got the ball back to the offense with some timely three and outs.
But the Sooners scored 51 points on the aggies while losing the turnover battle. That’s not luck. That’s our offense pretty much doing what they wanted to do against the poke defense. And that’s not mentioning 44 first downs which is 1 shy of the NCAA record.
Secondly, the OU coaches schooled their counterparts across the field in time management. OSU’s last possession of regulation ended in a three and out. One rush and two incomplete passes. Hardly any time taken off the clock. Monken admitted that he wasn’t thinking run clock, he was thinking score. The aggies had to punt to OU and the Sooners drained all but four seconds on a masterful 86-yard drive that tied the game.
Luck? Really? And as to Randle’s comment that the Sooners celebration meant that OU came into the game thinking they were going to lose? Laughable.
I suppose coming back from double digit deficits in the first and second halves is a sign of thinking you’re going to lose. And just what were the Sooners supposed to do after winning that game? Toss the ball to the official and calmly walk to the dressing rooms? They had just won. In overtime. On the last play of the game. Taking their first lead of the day to end the game.
On Senior Day…I think a little celebration was in order. They danced on the field when the music was played and went to the the stands to high five the fans. CRAZY!!! The fans didn’t storm the field. Goal posts were not torn down and carried out of the stadium. I seem to remember last year the tables were turned. It was OSU that was ranked higher and favored at home just like OU was this year. It was a less competitive game that was over early. Fans rushed the field. Goal posts were torn down and dragged out of the stadium. Why according to Randle’s theory, the pokes must have thought they were never going to win that game or any game in the future!
I guess I’ll never understand Aggie logic.
All this brings us to the last game of the season against TCU on the road. Outside of Notre Dame, this TCU team might have the best defense the Sooners see all season. It will be a huge task keeping their defensive ends off Landry. They will both play in the NFL someday.
On the offensive side they have a solid running game and will try and pound us up the middle. Mike Stoops shouldn’t have to worry about the pass with this bunch. Does he still throw out six and seven DB’s? Surely not. But this has been a strange season. Nothing will surprise me this Saturday.
There is a lot on the line with a share of the Big 12 title and a possible BCS bowl birth. TCU is the last team standing in the way. That’s why the Worry Meter is at 85% this week.
With all that being said….BOOMER!!! — Dave
