Some thoughts while trying to find something big and white to wear in the cold on Saturday night because we’re unlucky enough to be in an odd-numbered section . . .
Our Notre Dame connections in Chicago are worried that the Sooners will blow out Notre Dame. We are thinking this is the influence of former Fighting Irish Coach Lou Holtz, who always said his team will just be lucky to stay on the field — all the while concocting some mad scientist formula for an upset (See Arkansas’ 31-6 beat down of Oklahoma in the ’78 Orange Bowl after Holtz suspended most of his starting backfield).
Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit will call the game for ABC-TV. Remember the days when we all thought Brent was anti-OU? No more. The guy can have gushing praise nowadays, but that might be tested when the media-darling Fighting Irish come to town.
We’re polling 30 of our college football experts (all who admit to an OU bias), and so far the average predicted score is Oklahoma 30, Notre Dame 15. Vegas puts the Sooners at a 10-point advantage, so they’re not far off.
Dismissed LSU sensation Tyrann Mathieu was arrested for marijuana possession after police say they found 10 bags of high-grade marijuana in his apartment. Mathieu has officially changed his nickname from Honey Badger to Honey Boo Boo.
Barry Switzer gave his take on Saturday night’s game on Sirius XM radio this morning. The King says Oklahoma has too much speed for Notre Dame, but odd things can happen and the Sooners have to prove they are the better team. On Landry Jones: “How he goes is how the Oklahoma offense goes.” Hear the audio here.
We hear some Sooner-experts are dogging Coach Bob Stoops for not teaching players enough about Oklahoma-Notre Dame history. Like that would make a difference to players who were born after the Gipper administration. Notre Dame hasn’t been a major factor in college football in their lifetime.
Heck, we don’t want the Sooners thinking there is anything to luck of the Gold Domers — they might believe it. All they know is Notre Dame is ranked No. 5 and have won 8 of 9 contests against Oklahoma — the important stuff.
