Dave: Sorry Landry, bring back Nate

by

Received a text from my brother after the K-State game.  It simply said, “Great, we suck again.” Can’t really argue with that.

Now some people may say that’s too critical, it’s only one game, it’s a long season etc..etc.. But I think it’s right on when you consider the expectations coming into this season, and really any season for the Oklahoma Sooners.

We are supposed to be one of the top five programs in college football EVERY YEAR.  We are supposed to contend for the National Title EVERY YEAR.  Teams like that DO NOT lose to a program like K-State AT HOME.

The worry meter is spiking at 90%

Don’t get me wrong, KSU is a good team.  But they are no where near elite.  And unfortunately, neither are we anymore.  I remember when we had lost only two home games in the span of 11 years.  Now we have lost two home games inside of 11 months.  I also remember that  whenever a ranked team came to town we played like our hair was on fire and usually buried them.

Not anymore.   So what happened?  The injuries to the offensive line did not help, but I’m pinning this loss on the Quarterback position.  Now from  everything I have heard Landry is a heck of a nice guy. But I’m done defending him when it comes to being the starting QB for the Oklahoma Sooners. He is an average college quarterback at best.

Given a choice right now, I would take Nate Hybl over Landry in a heartbeat. Landry may have more physical talent, but Nate was tougher, smarter and a better leader at the QB position.  Just my opinion.  How does Landry not throw away that ball at the goal line rather than get sacked and stripped of the ball?  He’s been the starter for almost three full seasons worth of games!

Dave struggles to get the loss to K-State out of his system. And a tough Texas Tech road game is ahead.

How does he not know where he is on the field and have a better pocket awareness by now?  I don’t think that is being over critical.  The progression of his game has stopped.  Not that our backup would do any better.  How does Bell fumble that ball inside the five in the Belldozer formation?  That’s the only play he runs!  Almost every snap he has ever taken is that one play!  It’s not like he was running a zone option and was having to decide whether or not to hand the ball off to a RB, keep the ball himself, or actually throw the thing.  He had one option.  Catch the ball from the center and run.  There is no excuse for fumbling on that play.

Now some would say that the defense folded in the fourth quarter giving up two long 3rd down plays.  And yes, they could have stopped KSU and given the offense one more chance.  But they never should have been put in that position.  And what during that game would lead you to believe the offense would have driven down the field and scored the winning touchdown in the last two minutes?

The offense, specifically the QB’s, lost the game.  Which is why the worry meter is hovering at around 90% this week.

To be honest, as I write this I have no idea what Texas Tech’s record is.  Haven’t seen them play a down and I don’t know if they are any good.

Despite this, I have no reason to believe OU will beat Tech.  We haven’t won in Lubbock for almost ten years.  And if our first three games are any indicator, I don’t see why that changes.

I do however hang onto one sliver of hope.  Last year when Tech beat OU in Norman, the Sooners bounced back in a big way and trounced KSU in Manhattan.  This year KSU beats us at home and now we travel to Tech.  I’m sure hoping that history repeats itself, but I’m not very confident that it will.  With all that being said…BOOMER!!
