A day away from kickoff in El Paso and we’re wondering just how the 2012 season will begin.
Best cases scenario is the Sooners winning by about….oh…..70. But, that won’t happen.
Worst case scenario is losing. That won’t happen either; so, it’s more like a final score of 14 to 3 that would be the realistic worst case.
But, since no one really remembers opening games (except when your Heisman trophy winning QB’s college career is ended), the better question is what specifically does an Oklahoma fan hope to see on Saturday night?
Here is our top five wish list (in order of desire):
1. A ground game. Last year’s injury to Dominique Whaley put the Sooners rushing attack into cardiac shock. It languished through the season, popping nitro pills when needed, but never quite recovering. Whaley is back from his injury, so we’re hoping the run game is too.
2. No busted coverage giving up big pass plays. If our cornerbacks and safeties bust, we’re expecting Mike Stoops himself to strap on the helmet and play. Nothing short of that will suffice.
3. A good game from receivers. You can knock Landry Jones all you want, but the reality is he’s one of the top three QBs in the country. If the passing game suffers as a result of the departure of Ryan Broyles and the suspension of Jaz Reynolds, it’s going to be because the wide outs are dropping passes. Kenny Stills must play well. Trey Metoyer should see the UTEP game as his coming out party.
4. No injuries. Another injury to the offensive line and we might as well lower our expectations to a two or three conference loss season. The O-line is good, but thin. If Coach Stoops is still playing Landry and most of the starting offense at the beginning of the fourth quarter I am going to write him a letter. Unless of course we are behind on the scoreboard or only two scores ahead. Then I’m going to write a different letter.
OK, that was easy.
Now, before it goes unnoticed, no matter how the UTEP game turns out or how many of the above items we get, please understand that it is great that Oklahoma football is back again. Boomer!
