The SEC is imposing a fine on cowbells used by fans of conference schools. That is expected to hit Mississippi State hardest, because fans there have a history of rattling the cowbells to distract opponents who come to Starkville.

Southeastern Conference athletic directors meeting in Orlando, Fla., finalized a fine structure, according to MSU AD Scott Stricklin: $5,000 for the first offense, $25,000 for the second and $50,000 for the third. See story here.

BYU is leaving the Mountain West Conference to rejoin the Western Athletic Conference in everything but football, which will be played as an independent.

BYU will seek final approval for the moves from its owner, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, either today or Thursday. Pending approval, a press conference is planned for early next week.

Alabama dropped a letter from the name of its November 13th opponent, raising new questions about the state of education in this country. The mistake occurred on all tickets for the Alabama vs. Mississippi State game in Tuscaloosa. Now there’s one less P in Mississippi.

Wide receiver Josh Jarboe has been dismissed from the Troy State program two years after Bob Stoops kicked him off the Sooner squad before the then recruit ever even practiced in Norman.  Jarboe was a heralded recruit in 2008, despite some criminal charges at his home town in Georgia, but was allowed to enroll at OU.  But before two-a-days, Jarboe posted a Youtube video of a profanity-laced rap song about guns and shooting people, leading to his dismissal.

This time, Troy dismissed Jarboe for undisclosed incidents during pre-season camp.  He had been charged with misdemeanor harassment and disorderly conduct earlier in his Troy tenure.  Jarboe is expected to transfer to Northeast Mississippi Community College.

Alabama Coach Nick Saban is banning NFL scouts from practicesSaban has told the scouts they are not welcome until further notice and has called on the NFL to suspend agents or scouts who make illegal contact with college players which jeopardizes their eligibility.

Something called AnnArbor.com is getting headlines with its story that a poll of Big 10 players rate Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor both the most exciting and most over-rated player in the conference. But then you look at the story and it turns out only 10 players were asked the question and only three of them said Pryor was the most over-rated.

Maybe someone should tell Annarbor.com what constitutes a “poll.” A sampling of 10 people is a statistical irrelevance. Very over-rated.

Ex-Duck, ex-Heisman candidate and ex-robber Jeremiah Masoli is transferring to Mississippi because Houston Nutt needs a quarterback (a situation created when Jevan Snead turned pro only to discover no NFL team wanted him) and because a peculiar NCAA rule allows students who have graduated but with eligibility left can transfer to another school’s graduate program.

Apparently Ol’ Miss has a graduate program called, “How to work the system.” At least this time its an athlete exploiting the rules instead of the NCAA exploiting the athletes.
