Metoyer, Bell put on show for Red-White

There are two seasons in Oklahoma: football season and tornado season.

They overlap for the Sooners’ Spring Red-White Game in April, won this year by the White team 22-21.

The threat of “life threatening” tornadoes didn’t keep 20,509 fans from coming to the spring game in Norman to get a dose of Sooner football that will have to satisfy them until the September 1, 2012 kickoff in El Paso to begin the actual 2012 season.

Most will probably be keeping track of highly touted redshirt freshman Trey Metoyer, who didn’t disappoint. The five-star recruit had six catches for 72 yards.

“He’s got incredible hands, ability to make plays adjusting to the football, all the things you saw today,” Coach Bob Stoops said after the game. “He can run, and he really relishes the moment. He’s a competitor for a young guy.”

Metoyer was at military academy last season because his high school grades did not qualify.

“I haven’t been in a real game since (the U.S. Army All-American game),” Metoyer said. “Back in Virginia, we didn’t really have a big crowd or anything, but it felt good to come out hear today and perform.”

Metoyer joins veterans Kenny Stills, Jaz Reynolds and Trey Franks to form a receiving corps that will be among the best in the country. Starting QB Landry Jones will have good targets in the fall.

Jones played only one series in the Red-White game. The rest of the reps at quarterback were split among backups Drew Allen, Blake Bell and redshirt freshman Kendal Thompson.

In fact Thompson engineered a winning touchdown drive to make the White team 22-21 victors.

“Kendal, at the very end, put together a nice little drive,” Jones said. “Drew and Blake obviously did a good job of leading the team and putting us in good situations. So I thought all in all it was a pretty positive scrimmage.”

Bell was 14 for 19 for 179 yards, a marked improvement over his previous passing performance.
