Oklahoma-Baylor Game Thread

by
The scene from Floyd Casey stadium in Waco before OU-Baylor.

We’re looking for a tight game at halftime. Our bold prediction: Sooners trail at halftime, then win by 14. Here we go….

1st Quarter

Sooners catch a break with a holding penalty nullifying a Baylor TD pass on second play of the game.  Baylor catches a break on a roughing the passer call when Corey Nelson knocks Robert Griffin for a loop.  Then officials flag Jamell Fleming for interference.  There is laundry all over the field.

Lots of defensive pressure on Griffin.  Bears’ drive stalls, forcing a punt.

Sooners start on their own 16.  Kameel Jackson starting at wide out.  Oklahoma running it’s ball-control passing game.  So far, Jaz Reynolds is the go-to guy.  Baylor’s blitz gums up drive. Kameel Jackson TD reception is nullified by an unintended chop block by Finch and drive stalls. Tress Way punts into the end zone.

Both teams have had touchdowns taken away by penalties.  Now, let’s play ball.

Frank Alexander is a beast. Gets first sack of Griffin. Bears must punt from their 12.  Stills returns to the OU 47 to set up shop for Oklahoma.

Roy Finch is just not a run around end kind of guy.  Loses 2 on run, but gets 4 on a pass.  Reynolds can’t secure a sideline pass and the Oklahoma offense sputters.   Michael Hunnicutt hits a 47-yard FG.  Nice!

Oklahoma 3  Baylor 0  5:34  1st Qtr.

Baylor starts drive on their own 24.  Bears marching down the field with nice combination of runs and short passes. No long passes to give the Sooners chance to pressure Griffin.  Wort’s facemask penalty sets Baylor up in red zone. Backed out of the red zone with their own procedures penalties

On a 3rd and 17, Griffin runs a keeper and sets up a Baylor field goal.

Oklahoma 3 Baylor 3  1:09  1st Qtr.

Sooners start on their own 26.  Baylor’s defensive secondary is all over the Oklahoma receivers. Two quick broken up passes and on third down Landry Jones throws throwns a 27 yard strike to Kenny Stills.

From Baylor 48, Trey Franks loses the ball and the Sooners drive dies.  Turnovers will equalize this game.

Sooners have only 1 yard rushing. Bears have none.

End of First Quarter.  Oklahoma 3 Baylor 3.

Bears start on their own 30.  Wort makes a good play on Griffin’s scramble and Bears must punt.  Sooners return to 10 yard line, but horse-collar penalty moves the ball out to the 25 where Oklahoma starts this drive.

Oklahoma is missing go-to guy Broyles.  But Jones finds Kameel Jackson to convert 3rd down.  On next third down he finds Trent Ratterree.  On third third down from Baylor 29, Jones is sacked, taking the Sooners out of field goal range.  Drive dies.  Another Tress Way punt.

Baylor gets big run after catch from Kendall Wright and Bears are marching deep into Sooner territory.  Ronnell Lewis is down with injury.  Stoops livid with Harris.   Baylor easily runs the ball right past linebackers for a Bear touchdown.

Oklahoma 3 Baylor 10  7:14 2nd Qtr.

Sooners start from their own 28.  Offense operating with more urgency now. Nice mix up of runs and passes, with a key 20 yard reception by Stills. From the 21, Jones throws the ball into an obvious rush.  On 3rd down and 11 ffrom 21, pass to James Hannah at the first down marker, but short.  On fourth down from the Baylor 11, the Bell-dozer comes in.  Bears stuff it, officials make bad spot, but Bell gets the first down.

On 2nd 2, Bell back in.  Blake Bell bulldozes into end zone and Sooners score their first touchdown behind Ripkowski, Ratterree and a pulling guard Tyler Evans.

Oklahoma 10 Baylor 10  2:38 2nd Qtr.

On first play Griffin hits Reece for 70 yard touchdown pass. Oklahoma receivers were not within 5 yards of him. Obviously the Sooners cannot cover this receiver.

Oklahoma 10 Baylor 17  2:25 2nd Qtr.

On 3rd down from midfield Sooners at the 1:05 mark, Stoops calls time out. Oklahoma coaching staff doesn’t look too happy with the flow of the game. Neither are we.  Jones decides to run and is short of the first down.

Halftime score:  Oklahoma 10 Baylor 17

We hit our halftime prediction (that Baylor would lead at the half).  We’ll see what kind of adjustments the Sooners can make at halftime. The defense is used to doing that, but the offense not so much.  The Sooners became ineffective on 3rd downs.  Many penalties uncharacteristic of this team.  Anemic run game (not so uncharacteristic).

Oklahoma on Baylor 33.  Jones passes to the two for a killer play.  Great catch by Kenny Stills.  Next play? Belldozer for a touchdown.

Oklahoma 24 Baylor 17  11:11 3rd Qtr.

Baylor starts on their possession on their own 27.  Stalls at midfield.  Sooners take over on own 14 after Baylor punt. on 3rd and 8 from OU 49, pass play is short of the first down.  Drive stalls.  That’s usual for a 3rd quarter drive for the Sooners.  Way punts.

Baylor starts at their own 16. On the luckiest deflected pass, Wright scores on an 87 yard touchdown.  Amazing.

Oklahoma 24 Baylor 24  6:39 3rd Qtr.

Baylor defense is now energized and get sixth sack of the season of Jones. On 3rd and long, Stills drops a perfect pass that would have been a first down.  That’s on Stills.  Another Way punt.  he’s getting tired.

Griffin misses another wide open receiver.  He was 10 yards behind any safety.  This Oklahoma secondary is in disarray.  Streak routes they can’t cover.

On 4th and 11, Griffin converts. On very next play, the Baylor receiver is wide open for touchdown. Baylor takes the lead.

Baylor 31 Oklahoma 24   1:15 3rd Qtr.

Oklahoma offense fights for first downs. Baylor offense gets large chunks of yards.

Hate to be a boo bird now, but Sooners will be luck to hold Baylor to 50 points.  This is really disappointing, given that USC is ahead of Oregon and a win in Waco would set the Sooners up nicely in the BCS.

End of 3rd Qtr:  Oklahoma 24 Baylor 31.

On 3rd and 33 from 46, Jones finds Millard to keep drive alive.  Jones stares down receiver and Baylor gets interception.  Jones was about the only guy who hadn’t made some mistake — until now.  Baylor marches down the field, with penalty help and score touchdown from the 11.

Oklahoma 24 Baylor 38.  4th Qtr.

On a third and 14 from the Baylor 25, Jones overthrew Trent Ratterree.  On 4th down, who will make the big play?  Jones throws the ball out of the back of the end zone.  Jones gave no receiver an opportunity to even catch the ball.  No receiver was fighting to get open, they were just running a standard route.

So No. 4 Oregon has lost. Maybe someone should tell the Sooners on the bench.

Sooners offense gets to the Baylor 4, with a great pass by Jones.  Belldozer scores TD and back in game.

Oklahoma 31 Baylor 38  5:55 4th Qtr.

On 3rd and 17 from own 37, Griffin overthrows receiver. Coverage was good. Sooners will have a chance to tie this game up. Starting from their own 23.  Here are the plays:  Finch run to the 41.  Finch run for no gain.  Pass to Clay to the OU 47.  Pass to Reynolds to the Baylor 29.  Reynolds again to the 22.  Pass to Franks to the 19.  1:41 left in the game.  Pass into coverage incomplete.

Bulldozer in the game. From 6 Bell scores a touchdown.  :51 left in regulation.

Sooners going for two point conversion.  And we all know what the play is going to be.  Then Sooners get flagged for procedure.  Kick the extra point.

Oklahoma 38 Baylor 38  :51 4th Qtr.

Defense must step up.  They don’t.  Stoops calls a time out?  Another Baylor receiver BEHIND the Sooners defense.  Again. For touchdown with :08 left in game.

Final Baylor 45 Oklahoma 38
