Oklahoma vs. Kansas State – Game Thread

Our live posts during the Sooners game in Manhattan.

Time to see if the Sooners can step up to the plate and recover from last week’s loss.  Manhattan is a very tough place to play.  The K-State student section is the loudest we’ve ever heard.  Let’s hope that’s no factor today.

1ST QUARTER

Horrible hit on Dom Whaley — left ankle injury — on first play of game. This doesn’t look good.

Sooners march down to the K-State 19. Now officially in the Red Zone. This is where Sooners problems on offense have been this year. Let’s see what happens:  1) rush of 1 yard; 2) pass to Broyles who extends to hit the pylon and scores the apparent TD.  But replay show Broyles stepped out at 1; 3) On first and goal from the 1, Sooners have Blake Bell on the backfield and runs it in, following Trent Ratterree block on LBs for touchdown.

Oklahoma 7 Kansas State 0.   12:12 1st Qtr.

Kicking team miscue…kick out of bounds, sets KSU up with short field at own 40 yd. line.  Sooner D stalls Kansas State, with Wort sack of QB the big play.  Impact of Wort’s absence last week may become even more evident today.  Colvin at corner. Fleming not on field.

Sooners back on offense. Helped by uncharacteristic KSU face mask penalty.  Back in Red Zone from KSU 11 y.l.:  1) incomplete pass; 2) incomplete pass; TD pass to back of end zone to Dejuan Miller!

Oklahoma 14 Kansas St. 0  7:10 1st Qtr

Oklahoma just doesn’t know how to cover a kickoff.  KSU with short field from OU 40 after return.  Wildcats get 54 yard FG with aide of a Kansas wind.  Wow.

Oklahoma 14  Kansas St. 3  6:07 1st Qtr.

Sooners on third possession:  Oklahoma coaches out-think themselves on this drive.  On 3rd and 2 from own 28, Sooners put Blake Bell back in the game, but Oklahoma gets flagged for 12 men in huddle.  Interesting twist to offense, but didn’t get a chance to work.  Later, Sooners try the same thing on 3rd and 2 and Bell fumbles the ball.  Time to end this experiment.

Kansas State marches on Sooners. Helped by pass interference on Tony Jefferson.  End of 1st quarter, Sooners up 14-3. OU 19y rushing, 12-of-15 passing for 164y, 23 plays, 183y. KSt 8-28 rushing, 1-of-3, 5y passing, 11-33 total.

2ND QUARTER

K-State QB Klein makes it look easy, walks into end zone almost untouched.   88 yard drive.  Where is that Oklahoma defensive swagger now?

Oklahoma 14 Kansas 10  14:52

Fourth possession:  On 3rd and 2 from midfield, Sooners go back to short passing game — to Finch. On next play Jones throws interception to a wide open guy in purple.  On defense, the Sooners give up simple option game, with Corey Klein running like a gazelle. Oklahoma defensive players are taking poor angles on every play.

This may be the most over-rated Oklahoma defense in Stoops’ tenure.

Kansas State 17  Oklahoma 14  12:44 2nd Qtr.

Fifth possession:  Passing to Broyles seems easy.  Unless the guy gets worn out, play calling should be easy.  Jaz Reynolds makes a great catch on this drive.  Next play is pass to Reynolds for touchdown.  Extra point blocked.

Oklahoma 20 Kansas St. 17  11:20  2nd qtr.

On 3rd and 5 from K-State 30, Wildcats’ Klein runs up middle for first down.  Later simple draw play embarrasses Travis Lewis and Javon Harris.  Sooners defense have no answer for a very simple but well executed offense.  But K-State misses easy FG with 4:27 left in half.

Sixth possession:  Sooners in passing mode.  On 3rd and 3 from own 38, Sooners complete pass to James Hannah in middle of field.   On next play, deep pass by Jones is thrown to a guy in purple.  Another underthrown pass by Jones.  INT No. 2.  Kills drive.

Seventh poessesion from KSU 35, after fumble recovery, with :19 left in half:  Jones overthroing receivers.  Three incomplete passes in a row.  Michael Hunnicutt hits 53 yard field goal.

Oklahoma 23  Kansas St. 17   Halftime

Jones 23-33-2  for 290 yards in first half.  Broyles 10 catches for 105 yards at half.

3RD QUARTER

Good defensive stop by Frank Alexander.

Eighth possession:  Sooners mix up some runs and passes.  Roy Finch sparks the offense with a nice run. On next play, quick sideline pass to Broyles results in 29 yard tight rope touchdown.

Oklahoma 30 Kansas State 17  10:22 3rd Qtr.

Sooners defense has no answer for K-State’s Klein.  Except OU now bringing blitzes.  It works.

Ninth possession:  James Hannah becomes secret weapon — 37 yard catch and run by the senior.  In Red Zone from 8:  1) one-handed catch by Jaz Reynolds.  He must be wearing stick ’em.  Sooners go up 37-17.

Oklahoma 37 Kansas St. 17  4:27 3rd qtr.

Venables dials up more defensive pressure on Klein, as K-State is forced out of run game to play catch up.

10th possession:  Roy Finch has BIGTIME run up middle for 31 yard touchdown run.   Freshman guard Adam Shead makes key block on play.

Oklahoma 44  Kansas St. 17  1:27 3rd qtr.

11th possession:  Deep pass to Kenny Stills who hangs on to a 54 yard pass.  This demonstrates the depth of the receiver corps for Oklahoma.  In the Red Zone (from the 13): 1) Run for 1.  2) pass for TD to Trent Ratterree.  Fifth TD pass today for Jones.  31 unanswered points now for Sooners.

Oklahoma 51 Kansas St. 17  14:22 4th qtr.

Venables defense in second half has been brilliant. Of course it helps when the offense puts your opponent behind and out of their game plan.

12th possession:  Jones just 7 yards shy of 500 yards passing.  2nd and 11 from 27:  Short pass down sideline to Broyles and Jones gets it :  505 yards.

61 yard run for Millard for TD!  Amazing.  Good block by teammate Ryan Broyles.

Oklahoma 58  Kansas St. 17  11:03  4th qtr.

13th possession:  Drew Allen in at QB.  Landry watching from sideline — with a smile.  OU practicing the Blake Bell wildcat on 3rd down. Nice.

Game Over.

Oklahoma 58 Kansas St. 17  FINAL
