Haywood makes puzzling departure from team

Back-up TE Austin Haywood’s decision to quit the team in mid-season has some wondering, “why”?

Coach Bob Stoops announced on Monday that the sophomore tight end was transferring, although the two players ahead of him on the depth chart, James Hannah and Trent Ratterree,  are seniors.

Haywood’s father told the Daily Oklahoman that he was surprised by his son’s decision and was uncertain where Haywood would play next.

“He was playing as a sophomore,” Paul Haywood said. “He was rotating in a lot. I was kinda upset about it (Austin’s decision to transfer), but I said, ‘Go somewhere where you’re happy.”

The elder Haywood said the departure last year of offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson may have played some role in his son’s decision to leave the team.
