First Quarter:
Kenny Stills slips on first play, then drops a pass….then must have told Landry Jones to get him the ball again — resulting in 17 yard TD pass. Sooners go up early 7-0.
Spirited KU defense in the red zone stalls Sooners offense. Settle for 36 yd FG. Oklahoma up 10-0.
On a 4th and 1 Jamell Fleming let’s pitch man past him and KU gets 56 yard TD on the option. That was embarrassing. Oklahoma 10, Kansas 7.
Sooner drive stalls, after some nice Roy Finch runs. Has to punt to a spirited Jayhawks. Apparent that Sooners have to play with purpose or this will be a problem game for four quarters. Needed to stop a good KU running game.
End of First Quarter: Oklahoma 10 Kansas 7.
Golden boy Whaley gives up the football to set KU up for a short drive to take the lead in the 2nd qtr. Instead Kansas gets a field goal to make it a 10-10 tie. 11:46 left in 2nd.
So we’ve now seen busted play to give up big TD and an uncharacteristic fumble. A couple of key miscues involving certain players. Will it put the entire team into a funk and cause the Sooners to fall flat? We’ll see how the rest of this quarter plays out.
Sooners have been good this year about responding to opposing team’s score. They did that here, with a fast-past drive ending in a run-through-the-keyhole play by little Roy Finch. Oklahoma goes up 17-10.
What a way to set a record! A 56 yard TD catch by Ryan Broyles for an NCAA career reception record (317). Sooners go up 24-10.
Not sure I’ve seen Oklahoma miss so many sure tackles. This is ugly. KU’s offense is making Sooners look silly. KU gets easy TD. Oklahoma 24 Kansas 17. 3:43 2nd Qtr.
Sooners respond with quick drive down field. On 4th and 1 at 3 yard line Sooners line up and run — grinding out first down. Then Whaley drops a pass that would have scored. Then Millard stubs his toe and falls down. What? This team is not focused like we’ve seen all year. OU takes a FG and a 10 point lead.
Halftime Score: Oklahoma 27 Kansas 17.
When Broyles set the record Stoops ran the length of the field to tell officials to take the ball out of play. Keepsake. On the same catch he set the NCAA record, Broyles also broke the Big 12 record for career touchdown catches, passing Oklahoma State’s Rashaun Woods. Broyles has 43 touchdown catches.
Javon Harris blows up KU’s first third down play. Three and out. But Jones throws two incompletions and fail to get a first down. Surely we’re not going to see a defensive battle now. Casey Walker and Tom Wort are hurt and being looked at on the sidelines. That could be a critical development.
Wort back in. Shuts KU offense down. TV announcer says seems like crowd is waiting for Oklahoma to awaken. Hey, we’ve been waiting for two quarters now.
This game is turning into a major bad news night. KennyStills injures knee on a five yard pass play. Fortunately, walked off on his own power.
Broyles run to the one yard line is proof that the old “ground can’t cause a fumble” isn’t really true. Sooner drive stopped by Broyle’s extra effort at the one-yard line trying to score and losing the football. Official also re-defines the phrase “indisputable evidence” and overturns call on the field. Big 12 officials now trying to help even out this game.
Sooners grind out long drive to the Red Zone. Then stalls. Again. Settles for field goal. KU defense has really confused the blocking schemes for Sooners inside the 20. Oklahoma 30 Kansas 17.
Oklahoma should have scored 14 points at end of good drives early in 3rd quarter. Instead they get only 3 points out of it. Sooners are allowing Jayhawks to stay in this game, and it’s only going to make it tough in the fourth quarter. Well, Michael Hunnicutt has played perfect tonight.
End of 3rd quarter with Sooners in another 3rd and short near the goal line. OU scored only 3 points in the whole quarter.
End of 3rd Quarter: Oklahoma 30 Kansas 17
Kansas winning the Red Zone game, stopping Oklahoma three straight times. Hunnicutt hits another field goal and Sooners take a 33-17 lead early in the 4th quarter.
Sooner defense shuts down Jayhawks.
When things aren’t going great, you go to great players. 43 yard TD pass to Ryan Broyles, of course. It’s Ryan’s night. Oklahoma 40 Kansas 17.
That halftime talk by Venables must’ve been a doozie. Sooners have shut down Jayhawks offense in the second half. Only 17 yards for Kansas in the second half and we’re at 8:28 mark of the 4th quarter.
This reminds me of some ugly Big 8 away games during the Switzer era, when you just wanted to get the win, get to the bus and forget about it.
Sooners have this KU defense worn out now. Whaley gets the TD on a 10-yard run. Ups the score to 47-17.
The OU pep band has been really prominent tonight. Give them and Hunnicutt game balls.
Final Score: Oklahoma 47 Kansas 17.
