Dan Hawkins is on the hot seat, whether he wants to admit it or not.
He’s in his make-or-break fifth season for CU. His record stands at 16-33. That’s in stark contrast to his days at Boise State. But then again he isn’t playing Wyoming every weekend in the Big 12 (harking back to Hawkins’ own, “This isn’t high school, this is the Big 12”).
But Hawkins would like you believe he’s still having fun.
“Totally,” he said, with characteristic enthusiasm. “It’s all about the challenge. It’s all about being with these guys. … I love the competition, love the strategy.”
That strategy won’t begin until Hawkins picks his quarterback. Last year Tyler Hansen was narrowly more effective than Hawkins’ son, Cody. He said the competition remains very close between the two, and he doesn’t anticipate naming a starter until about two weeks before Colorado’s opener against rival Colorado State.
