Lee Roy Selmon, 56, dies from stroke

Sooner great Lee Roy Selmon, who joined with his brothers to form a dominant defensive front end that led Oklahoma to back-to-back national championships, died Sunday.  He was 56.

Selmon had been hospitalized from a stroke he suffered on Friday.

“It is with very heavy hearts that the Selmon family announces the passing of our beloved husband, father and brother, Lee Roy Selmon,” a statement from Selmon’s family said. “For all his accomplishments on and off the field, to us Lee Roy was the rock of our family.
 
“This has been a sudden and shocking event and we are devastated by this unexpected loss. We deeply appreciate the prayers and support shown by family, friends, the football community and the public over the past two days.”
 
 Lee Roy Selmon won the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy in 1975. He ended his college career with 335 tackles, a school record for a linemen at the time, and 40 for a loss.
