Sooners prep for difficult Air Force offense

by

Saturday will be Military Appreciation Day at Owen Field when the Air Force cadets come to town to play the 7th ranked Oklahoma Sooners.

Certainly, the Sooners appreciate the unique option offense that the Falcons bring — so much so that OU players voluntarily spent their day off Sunday watching film of the AF win over BYU last week.

Air Force’s ball-control ground game harkens back to the Switzer days of the triple-option.  The Falcons rolled up 409 rushing yards against BYU this past weekend.  Their option is difficult to prepare for in a week.

The only offense Air Force will have in the air will be the pre-game four-jet fly over during the National Anthem (here’s hoping those jets don’t have live ammo in case the OU fans confuse “brave” with “Sooners”).

If Air Force hogs the ball it will be fewer opportunities for Oklahoma to score.   So, this game should be low-scoring.  Any survival by the Sooners will be good enough.

Air Force Offense

Air Force has 126 rushing attempts and only 25 pass attempts this season. They average more than 20 yards per completion. If defenses overplay the run they go for a home-run pass.

Sooner Defense

Oklahoma spent a few extra days during pre-season tw0-a-days to study Air Force’s option attack.

“Do you take a part of a couple of practices and work on Air Force? Yes, because it’s so dramatically different from anything else you’ll see,” Def. Coordinator Brent Venables said.

Air Force Defense

Air Force led the nation in interceptions (20) last season and was among the leaders in turnover margin (+22). Over the past four seasons, Air Force is +47 in turnover margin.  AF tends to play a 5-man front and a structured defense.
“When I watch these guys on tape, if you throw a bubble screen they blow them up,” Off. Coordinator Kevin Wilson said. “They’re used to selling out and throwing their body around. That’s what they do for a living.”

Injury list

Freshman running back Brennan Clay, who was carted off the field in the fourth quarter last week will be held out of Saturday’s game against Air Force due to a concussion.  LB Austin Box (back) and RB Roy Finch (ankle) will not play.
