Sooners sobered by loss to Texas, time to man up against Gamecocks
I unfortunately may have found a downside to “Sooner Magic”. And I think the downside is that
sometimes it may provide a false sense of security.
I’m sure after the Auburn game a lot of people ,including myself, felt better about our chances moving forward. We had just gone into our first SEC road game with a true freshman at quarterback and won. Everything is going to be fine!
But when you look closer at that contest, Auburn beat us in almost every statistical category except the scoreboard. Almost 200 more total yards, 15 more first downs, and over 10 more minutes in time of possession. Ifthe Tigers just kept running the ball in the fourth quarter, they most likely win.
But one mistake from the Auburn quarterback and the Sooners come out on top. And again, we start feeling good about our season. But Auburn is not a good team. They are now 2-4 on the year with three home losses.
The Sooner offense could not sustain drives. The defense gave up almost 500 yards of total offense. And after two weeks of feeling good about ourselves, we found out that “Sooner Magic” can sometimes be “Fool’s Gold”.
We played well for a quarter on defense against texas, but the offense could not take advantage
of the tremendous field position that gave us.
We started in or close to the longhorn side of the field in our first three possessions and only got three points out of it. You can’t do that against arguably the best team in the country (boy it hurts to say that) and expect to win anything.
Maybe more frustrating than that was the fact that after two weeks to game plan, that’s what the offense came up with? I do get the fact we have so many injuries to our wide receivers and the offensive line is not very good.
But this is OKLAHOMA. Next man up. This should never happen against your archrival. Try something. For all I know Hawkins could turn out to be a superstar given more reps. But what told the OU staff that he was going to move that offense after the first half?
They committed one if not two spies on him the entire game to keep him from running the ball. They dared him to throw because they knew he couldn’t. Why not try Arnold again?
Brent Venables is now 1-2 against texas and the two loses have been blowouts. The one win took a last-minute drive to secure victory. Did Riley really leave the cupboard this bare? Is it the players? Is it the coaching?
Whatever it is no one is going to feel sorry for the Sooners. They must figure something out and fast. South Carolina comes to Norman Saturday morning, and they are a deceptive 3-3 on the season. They lost to LSU by three points and are coming off a thrilling defeat to Alabama in Tuscaloosa, having had the ball in Bama territory only needing a field goal to win before being intercepted.
While Oklahoma is new to the SEC, the Gamecocks have been around that conference awhile. They won’t be intimidated at Owen Field or seeing the interlocking O and U on our helmets.
With how we have looked most of the season, how the heck are we favored in this game?
The Worry Meter is at 90% again this week. I hope it’s a happy Homecoming game. With all that being
