Defense will keep OU in the game, QB Hawkins presents danger for UT
The SEC got a good taste of what Sooner Magic is all about when Oklahoma walked out of Auburn with
what seemed like an unlikely win, trailing deep into the fourth quarter.
The Tigers helped a little by trying to throw the ball in their last few possessions rather than stay with the ground game and milk the clock. Kip Lewis literally tripped backwards into coverage, snagged the ball out of the air and ran down the sideline reaching the end zone just as the defender pulled him to the ground.
And in doing so coined the term “Kip Six”.
As impressive as that was, maybe the more important take away from the game was the play of quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. and the offense.
Being a true freshman in his first start in a road game in the SEC is daunting enough. But throw in the fact that he was without OU’s top five receivers and a suspect offensive line, and it was an amazing showing. He played with a poise that defied his age and experience. No turnovers and in a tight game, hit a massive pass to J.J. Hester for 60 yards to set up the touchdown that brought OU within one possession of the lead.
Add to that a flying two-point conversion after Kip’s heroics that eventually won the game, we could not have asked for more from Hawkins.
texas….man I hate those bastards — Dave
But more will be needed this week as the Sooners head south to the Cotton Bowl for the annual Red River Rivalry against the texas longhorns. texas….man I hate those bastards.
The past few years OU has come into this game as an underdog, and so it is this year. The last spread I saw was texas by 14.5 points. But we still really don’t know how good the longhorns are as they have yet to play anyone of consequence. Michigan was a nice win on the road, but they already have two losses. They are a mediocre team at best.
The Sooners will be the stiffest test texas has seen this year. And with OU’s defense, we will be in any game we play this season.
Hawkins has seen SEC defenses and will not be intimidated by the Cotton Bowl atmosphere after playing and winning at Jordan-Hare. If he can take care of the ball and take what is given, he is a dangerous quarterback.
The offensive line is coming around and this will be the second game in a row they have played with all starters healthy.
We have also received word that Ewers will start for texas after having been out for injury. We have seen Ewers. And we have beat him. And he hasn’t taken the field for three weeks and is liable to be rusty. If we can pressure him, like last year, this will be anyone’s game.
A lot is at stake, so the Worry Meter is spiking at 90% this week.
Anything can happen in this game. Many times, the higher ranked team has walked out to the fairgrounds to drown their sorrows in corny dogs and fried Snickers.
Hope the longhorns make themselves sick licking their wounds Saturday night. With all that being said….BOOMER!!!
