Venables says freshman QB Hawkins will start at Auburn, wide receiver makes change

by

Brent Venables said on his Monday night Coaches Show from Rudy’s barbecue in Norman that freshman QB Michael Hawkins will start Saturday against the Auburn Tigers.

Hawkins will replace Jackson Arnold, who turned the ball over three times in the Sooners’ 25-15 loss to Tennessee on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the OU coaches have also moved cornerback Jacobe Johnson to wide receiver to shore up the depleting ranks there due to injuries.

“We wouldn’t do it if there wasn’t real opportunity. That’s the vision. And that’s my challenge for the coaches. If you really think he can help, let’s use him,” Venables said.

Hawkins has the potential to be Oklahoma’s first freshman quarterback to start for the Sooners against Texas in a few weeks.
