Dave: Injuries abound, time to get creative

by

After years with Heisman-caliber QBs, watching punt after punt is hard to swallow.

Houston…. we have several problems.

Oklahoma came dangerously close to being the second big upset of the day when they escaped the Cougars 16-12 last Saturday night at Owen Field.

Venables made the comment at his press conference that it was probably not a good thing that he was bragging on his punter who had to take the field eight times.

But the punter and the defense won the game for the Sooners that night as the offense was a no show. And of course, that is extremely concerning.

Being a 28-point favorite and only posting 14 points, the other two points provided by the defense by way of a safety, against a bad Houston team is not good.

Some over all offensive stats after 2 games are startling: 109th nationally in passing offense, 108th nationally in total offense, and 131st in 3rd down conversion percentage, against less than stellar competition. Sounds suspiciously like rankings the Sooners defense had when “he who must not be named” was at the helm.

I can’t decide which is more frustrating. Having to score 56 points to win by 4 points, or only scoring 16 points to win by four points.

After years of high output offenses with Heisman caliber quarterbacking, watching punt after punt is hard to swallow.

So, what is going on? Is it the injuries, coaching, or the players? Has Venables not had enough time to recruit the depth they need to overcome injuries? In the age of NIL, do you even have enough money to pay for quality depth?

The offensive line and receiving core are decimated with injuries. They are young to begin with which adds another challenge. And Littrell needs to think outside the box and be much more creative in the play calling to try and compensate for all these issues.

The jet sweeps don’t qualify as “creative” anymore.

Tulane offers the first tough competition

If Seth was trying to hold back plays for tougher competition, well it’s here.

Tulane comes in for a Saturday afternoon kickoff this weekend, and they are looking for a big road upset. Although at this point, I’m not so sure it would be an upset. Not the way the young season has gone so far.

Tulane took Kansas State to the brink before losing by seven points. They rang up 27 points and almost 500 yards of offense on the Wildcats.

The 6’ 3” 200-pound Tulane quarterback will be snatched up in the portal by a top program next year. Last week he threw for 350 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Their running back posted 130 yards and a touchdown on over six yards a carry, and their top receiver, Mario Williams (remember him Sooner fans?) had 128 yards on just six receptions.

Our defense has shown they are much improved from previous years, put this will be the first real test of the season. And the offense is going to have to stay on the field and put some points on the board, or the defense is going to get gassed.

Two touchdowns and a safety aren’t going to win this game. That’s why the Worry Meter is spiking at 90% this week.

How much can the offense fix in six days of practice? We are going to find out pretty quick. With all that being said…. BOOMER!!!
