Bowl eligible Sooners need the practice time
Probably the most frustrating double digit win I have ever seen.
How the Sooners can go from one of the best offensive quarters in recent history to utter incompetence for the rest of the game, is beyond me.
It started out so great. I was so looking forward to a 56-13 beat down of the pokes that I was sure was coming after our explosive start.
But either the offense relaxed so much they lost their edge, or osu made the perfect adjustments, because the Sooners were shutout for that last 3 quarters of the game.
Maybe worse than the lack of scoring after that first quarter, was the complete incompetence in game and time management at the end of the fourth quarter.
The play calling and lack of clock awareness was stunningly laughable. When the Sooners couldn’t score after that first quarter, but were able to keep a double digit lead late into the fourth, of course they started to run the ball and milk the clock before the snap.
Nothing of the sort happened. If anything it seemed like they were doing everything they could to SAVE time.
Snapping the ball with 30 seconds left on the play clock, passing plays instead of the ground game, and at times they even seemed to go to a HURRY UP offense.
It was mind boggling to watch. And this wasn’t an isolated possession.
Series after series they kept speeding up when they needed to slow down. They seemed to be doing everything they could to give osu more chances to score down the stretch.
Luckily, even though you could tell they were gassed, the defense held on and Oklahoma came out with the win.
It was either that or Gundy looked in the mirror, realized he was Gundy and the team he coached was osu, and he wet his pants yet again against big brother.
Either way, OU won for the 91st time in 117 contests and once again confirmed the natural order of things in the Bedlam universe.
And this win comes with the added bonus of the Sooners now being bowl eligible. And the destination is not nearly as important as the extra practice time that bowl teams are allotted.
Being able to take that time and work with new recruits will be invaluable going into next season. The next step would be to try and finish with a winning season record.
Oklahoma will attempt to achieve that goal this Saturday night in Lubbock against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Tech holds the same record as Oklahoma and stat wise the two teams are very close in most departments.
The Sooners might have a little bit of an edge in the running game, whereas the Red Raiders average more yards passing the ball.
They score about the same amount of points per game, and give up about the same amount.
Of course Tech will have home field advantage and their fans always show up for a chance to beat OU. The Sooners will need to score in all four quarters this time to be able to grab a victory on the road in a tough environment.
A win Saturday added to a bowl win would build back great momentum going into the offseason and next year.
So for a couple of teams that are only at 6-5, this is still a very important game. As such the Worry Meter stays high at 90% this week.
It’s time to finish a disappointing season strong and look to the future. With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
