Dave: Crazy stuff happens in OU vs. Texas — but not optimistic this year

Crazy stuff happens in this (OU vs. Texas) game…. But I’m not optimistic.

New season goal: Become bowl eligible.

And that won’t be easy considering the way the Sooners have looked that past two weeks.

There is no guaranteed win left on the schedule. We can’t even count on Kansas to be a push over anymore.

The defense is lost right now. And it may take a few years before it is found.

I saw some stats from the first few years of Venables’ tenure as Defensive Coordinator at Clemson.

Gabriel is starting to remind me of a slightly less athletic Trevor Knight. Even so, he is the best we have.

His defenses ranked in the 50’s the first two years. Then in the third year they were a top 10 unit, and consistently stayed there throughout his time with the Tigers.

He is head coach now, so he has many more things that need his attention. Also, we need to realize that the Sooners lost more talent than anyone is willing to admit through graduation and the transfer portal.

So it most likely will be awhile before we see a top ranked defense in Norman. The problem now is that we don’t have an offense at the moment that can bail out the defense as we have had in the past.

Dillon Gabriel goes down with concussion in TCU game.

Dillion Gabriel has proven to be far from the Heisman quality quarterback that we have grown accustomed too.

He has talent and will make some great passes, only to turn around and airmail wide open receivers to kill drives Oklahoma has desperately needed to stay in games.

He is starting to remind me of a slightly less athletic Trevor Knight. Even so, he is the best we have and gives us the best chance to win.

That was painfully evident when he was knocked out of the TCU game on a dirty play from the Horned Frogs. Any hope of a comeback was gone.

And now we are left to wonder if Gabriel will be available this coming Saturday morning when the Sooners head to the texas state fair to face the longhorns in the annual Red River Rivalry, if that’s what it’s being called nowadays.

texas….man I hate those bastards.

Even a Sooners car tag is available from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles.

The longhorns are also missing their number one QB as he was knocked out in the game against the Crimson Tide.

I hate to give credit for anything that has to do with texas, but Ewers looked really good before he left that game. Alabama was lucky to escape with a win. And they faced the back-up QB for over half of it.

If Gabriel can’t go this week, I don’t hold out very much of a hope that we can keep our current win streak against the longhorns going this year.

The longhorns are by no means a great team, especially if Ewers is still out.

But of course, the Sooners are struggling. This will be the first time since the late 90’s that neither team has been ranked going into this contest.

Not a very good look for a couple of teams that are joining the supposed mighty SEC in a few years.

Crazy stuff happens in this game. But I’m not optimistic.

After the TCU game, it was suggested to me that I should just set the Worry Metter at 100% for the rest of the year and be done with it.

And after giving up almost 700 yards to a decent but not great Horned Frog squad, that seems right on the money. We will see what happens as the season progresses, but this week the Worry Meter is indeed at 100%.

Boy it sure would be nice to beat the horns and start a turn around. I guess crazier things have happened.

With all that being said…BOOMER!!!

Worry Meter:  100 %
