Oklahoma needs to be on its toes in Lincoln and dispel nagging doubts about the offense
That was the most uncomfortable 30 point win I think I have ever seen.
At least for the first half. After Kent St. spent the beginning 29 minutes of the game making OU look like….well…Kent St., the Sooners finally realized that the Golden Flashes weren’t going to roll over.
Down 3-0 with just over a minute left in the second quarter, Dillion Gabriel found Marvin Mims on a few sideline patterns and a nice streak route for a touchdown with just 18 seconds left before intermission. The Sooners then scored on their first drive of the third quarter and the route was on.
What took so long? My guess is that Lebby didn’t want to show his hand before the meat of the schedule begins.
But Kent St. had other ideas and probably forced Oklahoma to turn a few more pages in the play book in the second half, to make sure another top 10 team didn’t fall at home to a supposedly inferior opponent.
Nebraska has nothing to lose. The only thing that is going to salvage their season is a big upset of a top 10 team.
One would’ve hoped that we could have run a plain vanilla offense and taken care of Kent St. But we have to remember that this is still a new coaching staff with a new quarterback and several new pieces thru out the team.
And this was only the second game. So patience is warranted.
The Sooners need to be on their toes this coming Saturday morning when they face their first true test of the season.
On the road against their old rival the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
But Dave, are the reeling Huskers really a test? They are 1-2, just got beat by Georgia Southern and fired their head coach on Sunday.
Of course, all this is exactly why Oklahoma needs to come into this game with their hair on fire, ready to bury the Huskers and not look back.
A wounded animal is at its most dangerous.
And that is exactly what Nebraska is. They now have nothing to lose. The only thing that is going to salvage their season is a big upset of a top 10 team.
That is the opportunity that Oklahoma presents them.
While the Nebraska defense has been torched against less than stellar competition, their offense is averaging over 35 points.
And even though you would think that one week is not enough time for a new (interim) head coach to make wholesale changes, they will no doubt have some surprises for the Sooners on both sides of the ball.
They will be desperate to save their season.
How desperate? They fired Scott Frost and gave him a contractual buyout of $15 million.
Had they waited until October 1 st , just 20 more days, that buyout would have dropped to $7.5 million. That’s 7.5 million dollars that they could have saved and put toward a new head coach, or facilities, or NIL pay outs to players.
Is $7.5 million worth it to try and jump start the season?
Do they think the players will rally around an interim head coach and play so much better that it WILL be worth that much money? Is a win over Oklahoma worth $7.5 million?
Who knows. But they are willing to spend the money to find out.
On paper the Sooners should win this game comfortably.
But of course you don’t play the game on paper.
The first half of last Saturday’s game has unfortunately left a little bit of a nagging doubt about our offense. That, combined with the uncertainty of the state of Nebraska’s program going into this game, has put the Worry Meter at 70% this week.
Switzer vs Osborne it’s not.
But OU vs Nebraska can still stir up chills for those of us who are old enough to remember those epic contests of the past. With all that being said….BOOMER!!!
