Mad Dog: Our guy is back and we are happy

by

The pain was real but turned out to be fleeting. Lincoln Riley took the money and ran.

OK by me. The University of Oklahoma doesn’t need a fraidy cat on the sidelines.

I’m fine with Riley’s midnight run because Joe Castiglione pulled another one of his Harry Houdini magic tricks and landed what well could be a savior for OU’s vaunted and legendary football program.

Ladies and Gentleman, Brent Venables is back in town – and we again have hope that Sooner Magic is, indeed, intact and will return starting next September.

Everyone knows we’ve been here before.

Now, I had my complaints about Venables in the past. I’ve come to conclude over the years any problems I harbored, though, could mostly be blamed on Mike Stoops.

Brent Venables led OU in the glorious heydays of Bob. There, the Baghdad Blitzer stormed the Crimson and Cream sideline with an angry scowl and snarl of white-hot intensity that fed his hard-hitting, defensive lions the raw meat diet of quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends and receivers they needed to pillage and crush the dreams of lesser men.

We all know Brent’s back story, all the way back to his years with Bob, learning under the laser-focused legend Bill Snyder. All Snyder did was make a cellar dweller a powerhouse. Greatness breeds greatness, and Brent Venables is going to be great at OU.

Venables, fans, knows how to get it done.

A thousand fans waited at the Norman airport on December 5, 2021 for the arrival of new OU Coach Brent Venables.

Coupled with Brent’s reported hire of Mississippi State’s offensive mastermind Jeff Lebby, the sky appears to be the limit for our beloved Sooner football squad beginning next September.

Lebby’s Ole Miss offense has been ranked in the top five statistically over the last three years. Say it with me, Sooner faithful – Lincoln WHO? WHO CARES?

I haven’t been this excited since Bob and his squad made Tim Tebow cry at the Orange Bowl.

Other good news is that OU Running Back Coach DeMarco Murray is staying a Sooner, and co-offensive coordinator and offensive line Coach Bill Bedenbaugh also seems to be staying on the Sooner staff – and that builder of muscle men, Jerry Schmidt. “Schmitty,” also will be returning, rambling down the sideline of Owen Field with his storied, raging enthusiasm solidly on display.

Thank you, Jesus.

As Grace Slick, once intoned, “It’s A New Dawn.”

Yeah, baby, it sure is. Thank you, Jesus.

If Venables and company can staunch the recruit-bleeding currently underway at OU, or reverse it, and stabilize this next class and the following year’s group, it will be a significant notch in the Sooner’s way back and in Brent’s belt. OU has lost some valuable potential stars in the last couple of weeks – most of them hailing from California.

Here’s hoping the Big V, having just left Clemson, will dig deep into the South’s recruiting gold mine PDQ!

However, I don’t see him robbing the nest as you-know-who has done. That’s not Brent’s style, although anything could happen. Kids can go where they want, whenever they want.

All Venables has to do is smile and wink!

Venables isn’t going to say no to a 4 or 5-star kid who he recruited to Clemson, who changes his mind and wants to come to the glory land where football dreams come true.

It’s going to be a long nine months waiting on the Sooner’s to take the field next Fall.

The news will be sparse, the longing great and the wait unbearable.

Just take a deep breath and remember Sooner Nation – our boyfriend’s back and he’s going to save our reputation!
