Dave: Hindsight question: Was benching Rattler for Williams a good idea?

Sooners might need Rattler’s experience to battle OSU defense in Bedlam

About twice a decade little brother jumps up and pulls one over on big brother.

That’s what most signs point to this year in Stillwater as a lopsided Bedlam series seems to be favoring the upstart okie pokies this go around.

I had hopes the Sooners would bounce back from an ugly loss in Waco and finally round into form to bury a fading Iowa State team that has had its own disappointing year.

Well, Oklahoma won a tight game and the defense really showed out in my opinion. Which gives me some hope for Saturday.

But the offense…oh the offense. Caleb went 8-18 for 87 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 interception against Iowa State.

I can’t get my head around 87 yards passing. I know we won the game. But 87 yards?

And it’s not like Caleb spent the day running for his life in the pocket. He had time. And he just kept holding the ball.

Are the receivers not getting open? And not only did he hold the ball, he didn’t run with it. He just kept holding and holding. I get he wants to make a play downfield.

But he has the ability to run and gain yards. Take what the defense gives you. Several times he could have picked up five or six yards or more and kept a drive going.

I was frankly surprised Lincoln didn’t pull him for Rattler. If Caleb isn’t going to throw it or run it, what is he in there for? At least Rattler will try to gun it to someone.

I have to keep remembering that Caleb is still a true freshman who didn’t play a down his senior year in high school due to COVID and has only started in five college games so far. So the offensive issues can’t all be laid at his feet. And besides, the buck stops with the head man, Riley.

I know I will probably get roasted for this, and hindsight is 20/20, but should Riley have benched Rattler for the rest of the year after the texas game?

Sure, he was having a terrible day and Caleb came in and pulled out an OU victory in what seemed like a comeback for the ages.

But we have now found out that texas is a historically bad texas team this year.

Crazy things happen in that game. And maybe Caleb just doesn’t have the experience to go up against the more capable defensive teams on the schedule.

Rattler still has a year and half playing experience on his side and another year as a back-up.

He has quarterbacked a Biq 12 Title team. He quarterbacked a Cotton Bowl win over an SEC team.

Don’t look now but little brother has the #3 overall rated defense in the country

Again, I am sure some people are reading this and think I’m nuts.

I may have even said or written that Caleb is what this team has needed after the blow outs against TCU and Texas Tech.

But we have seen now what at least one high quality defense has done against a Caleb lead offense.

And if we thought that was bad, don’t look now but little brother has the #3 overall rated defense in the country.

Maybe a more experienced QB would have a better chance than a true freshman starting his sixth game.

But hey, you know what opinions are like. Well…everyone has one.

I’m afraid Mr. Mullet himself might not be able screw this one up with his usual wetting of his pants when he faces the Sooners.

But maybe the Sooners still have a few tricks up their sleeve to show us this Saturday night.

The Worry Meter is high at 92% this week. With all that being said, everyone have a great Thanksgiving and…BOOMER!!!
