Last week:
Well the offense looked better, getting points on seven of nine total possessions against Kansas State. The ninth possession being the kneel down to end the game.
However, a glaring problem with the defense got worse as the Wildcats continually converted third and long.
And when they couldn’t, they went ahead and went for it on fourth down and converted four out of five times on those attempts.
And all this with a K-State quarterback who was practically wearing a splint on his right leg.
Didn’t matter. Time after time Skylar Thompson, not a threat to run the ball, stood back in the pocket and ate a sandwich while he waited for a receiver to come open.
The defense has to get off the field and give the ball to the offense. That’s all there is to it. Complementary football. Give the offense more chances to score.
Rattler is improving weekly. Again, the offense scored on seven of nine possessions.
That’s pretty darn good. And the most important stat is the W in the win column.
But will it be enough at the Cotton Bowl this Saturday against texas?
This week:
texas….man I hate those bastards.
The longhorns have yet another new coach in Steve Sarkisian. He comes with a hit and miss coaching resume.
After holding the head coaching job at Washington for five years he left to take the same job at USC in December of 2013. Things kind of hit the fan when he was let go a few years later after Sark was discovered to have been drunk at team events and was even accused of being impaired while coaching a game against Arizona State.
He has since cleaned up his act and has taken the reigns at texas after a successful stint as Alabama’s offensive coordinator and QB coach.
You really have to throw out records and stats when it comes to this game, as crazy and unexpected things happen. But to me, this game will come down to containing the texas run game.
As most games often do.
longhorn running back Bijan Robinson is the real deal. He should be in the Heisman conversation. And he is doing it with a less than stellar offensive line.
I look for Riley to have a few new wrinkles on offense that we haven’t seen this year — Dave
He will be going up against the best defensive line he has seen so far.
If OU can keep him under 100 yards, we will have a shot. And you can’t talk about the texas run game without including longhorn quarterback and Oklahoma native son Casey Thompson.
Thompson, son of former Sooner QB Charles Thompson, has what has usually been an Oklahoma defense’s kryptonite. Mobility.
He can create on the run. Keeping him in the box will go a long way in the Sooners winning this game.
The Oklahoma offense needs to continue to commit to Kennedy Brooks and the run game. That opens up everything else. I look for Riley to have a few new wrinkles on offense that we haven’t seen this year.
And I also look for Rattler to take another step. Both in stats and leadership.
I personally believe there is a certain swagger to Rattler. Maybe not as much as Baker, but I think it’s there. And I think swagger comes up big in this
game.
He’s been in this atmosphere before. Thompson hasn’t.
And if last year doesn’t prepare a player for the hype and possible craziness of this game, nothing will.
But after looking at everything, I really don’t know what’s going to happen.
As such the Worry Meter is spiking at 90% this week.
For all those making the trip down, have a bevo burger and a corny dog for me. With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
