Dave: Some of the offense’s woes fall on Riley’s play calling

by

Just to get this out of the way, the people chanting “we want Caleb” from the student section last Saturday night were either drunk, or don’t really know anything about the game of football.

Probably both.

Rattler has no time to throw the ball deep.  The offensive line is not playing well at all.  In any facet of the game.

And while I can understand that Caleb would give an element of a QB run game, you would be risking injury to the future of the position because Caleb would be running for his life due to the O-lines futility.

And like I have said before, the wide receivers aren’t doing Rattler any favors as of late either.

Spencer’s one interception wasn’t his fault.  Hazelwood ran the wrong route.  Had he run the correct one, he would have drawn defenders out of that area and Stoops would have most likely caught that pass, which by the way was probably one of Rattler’s best passes of the night.

So when Riley talks about the entire offense needing to execute better, he isn’t just blowing smoke.  It’s the entire offense right now that is the issue.  Not just the QB.

And that includes Riley himself.

He has got to start giving Brooks the bulk of the carries and let Gray be the explosive change of pace third down back.

It’s just embarrassing when he gives Gray the ball to try and bull his way for a first down on 3rd and 2.  That should be Brooks’ carry all day long.

I continue to hold out hope that the offense will finally piece it all together and just kind of explode on some unsuspecting team.  And I think that it will eventually happen. But will it come before or after we have lost a game, or possibly even two?

A one loss regular season isn’t necessarily a death knell for a College Football Playoff spot.  It would put you on the edge of the knife and most likely relegate you to the fourth seed.

But two losses and you’re done when it comes to hopes of holding up that gold stick looking thing at the end of the season.

Unless the offense somehow “flips that switch”, two losses are defiantly a possibility the next two weeks starting with a Saturday afternoon kickoff against the Kansas State Wildcats in the Little Apple.

Don’t look now but Riley has a winning record against every other Big 12 team, except Kansas State.  And the Sooners have lost the last two against the Wildcats.

Will K-State’s QB Skylar Thompson play Saturday?

With the Sooners current struggles, a lot in this game depends on if Skyler Thompson starts at QB for K-State.

He had a knee injury a few weeks ago, and the initial word from Wildcat coach Chris Kleiman was that he wouldn’t be back until after their bye week which is October 9th

However, Thompson was seen warming up and throwing on the sidelines before the O-State game last Saturday.  And even though he did not dress out, people say he looked fine.

When asked about it this week Kleiman, like all good coaches was non-committal on a return time.  I would be surprised if Thompson didn’t give it a go.

If he is back to full strength, Oklahoma could be in for a long day.

Without Thompson, the Wildcat offense has been in the tank.  They still have Deuce Vaughn who ripped OU for 129 receiving yards out of the running back position last year along with a TD.  But Skyler Thompson is who K-State needs to make that offense hum.

But even with a back-up quarterback, this is a huge game for OU, as will be all the rest of them going forward.

And the “friendly?” confines of Owen Field are in the rear view mirror for the next two weeks.

This will be the Sooners first road game of the season.

This might actually be a good thing right now.  They can rally around each other.  It’s them against the world.

Will they step up to the challenge?

With everything on the line, the Worry Meter is running in the red at 85%.  It’s now October.

Will the Sooners make it another “Red October?”

With all that being said….BOOMER!!!
