The rumblings got a little louder after the Nebraska game last Saturday. What’s wrong with the offense? Why don’t we throw the ball deep? Caleb should be starting!
That last one is what I hear the most. But you know the old saying, the most popular guy on the team is the back-up quarterback.
Starting quarterbacks get all the blame when things are going wrong and they get too much of the credit when things are going right.
Rattler does not deserve all the heat he is getting. It’s true that he seems to not be as sharp as he was at the end of last year and he has missed some open receivers.
But did you know that his completion percentage is up from 67.5% last year to 74.7% so far this year?
That’s a pretty big jump. The defenses are not giving him the long throw. When you are consistently seeing two high safeties, you can’t throw the ball deep. And it seems to me his receivers aren’t doing him many favors.
I don’t know what is going on with Stogner. He isn’t getting separation. I have a feeling it may be lingering effects from his injury last year, be it physical or mental. And when he does get open, he has been prone to drops.
It’s not just Stogner. All the receivers need to do a better job of route running and getting open.
Also, yards after the catch are down. That to me means the receivers need to work on their blocking skills when they don’t have the ball.
The running game seems to be coming along. They had a good day against a good Nebraska defense.
The offense as a whole is just not clicking like it should yet. Thankfully the defense stepped it up against the Cornhuskers.
Holding anyone under 20 points these days in college football is a win.
If you had told me that we hold Nebraska to 16 points, I would have jumped for joy thinking hey, so that would be an easy 30 point win….but then our offense reared its ugly head and we were within a touchdown and a 2 point conversion of losing. And believe me, had Nebraska somehow drove the field in the last minute and got a touchdown, they would have tried for the win rather go to overtime.
But, as the saying goes, a win is a win. And the wins are going to start being much more difficult to get. Beginning this Saturday night in Norman when the West Virginia Mountaineers come to town.

West Virginia is probably the best team we will have played thus far. They definitely have the best defense we have faced.
I am not really sold on the quarterback Seth Doege. He’s a pocket passer and can throw the short and medium routes, but isn’t great at the deep ball.
And he is not a run threat.
Some fans want redshirt freshman Garrett Greene to take over at QB. He is a run threat, but is not consistent enough passing.
Head coach Neal Brown has used both during their games, but Doege is the starter.
One thing is for certain, the OU defensive line needs to be ready for Mountaineer running back Leddie Brown. He is a workhorse and will get a load of carries.
They had a really good win against Virginia Tech at home, but who knows really how good Tech is.
West Virginia has certainly fielded better teams in the past, but the Sooners have still not rounded into form.
Saturday will be a good litmus test to see where Oklahoma is.
Were they saving themselves for conference play and now that that is here, do they flip the switch?
Or will they be a work in progress for the rest of the year?
The Worry Meter is at 75%. Answers are coming. One way or the other. With all that being said…..BOOMER!!!
