Minnesota Gophers. Yeah, they lost to a better Ohio State team, but they showed they could burrow through roots and rocks and other dirty things to make a game of it, showing how rodents are the most underrated of nasty animals in college football.
Nebraska. Scott Frost has placed the Huskers in a colder deep freeze than we could have imagined. But then again, with a name like that….
Bob Stoops. He made his debut on the Fox college football stage on Thursday night in Minnesota. Nice to see his blunt enthusiasm on the screen (and his plug for old buddy Kevin Wilson, the O-Coordinator at Ohio State who expertly called the plays in the Buckeye’s win over the Gophers.) Stoops will be at home for the OU-Nebraska game on September 18.
North Carolina was a Top 10 pick until Friday night when Mack Brown’s squad laid an egg in a rough defeat at the hands of Virginia Tech. Chalk this one up to first game problems.
OU AD Joe Castiglione showed us all how to put a pouty spoiled fan in place on Twitter, when a snarky fan complained about limited capacity for the Tulane game. Joe C. fired back: ““Too bad you can’t be more grateful for what many have done to even have a game,” Castiglione said. “We will also keep those dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Ida in our thoughts.”
Oklahoma’s defense. Just when we all thought the Sooners D had turned the corner and was much improved, we see them look like Swiss cheese against Tulane’s passing attack (296 yards). Of course, let’s give more respect to the Green Wave. But still. That first game made our LBs and secondary look anemic.
No one gets more thumbs up this week than OU kicker Gabe Brkic, who set a school record three FGs beyond 50 yards on Saturday. And without two of those the Sooners would not have won the game. Where does Brkic, who sports a moustache, get his power?
“Thats’ where my power comes from,” he said, “my ‘stache.”
First game officiating. The teams weren’t the only ones rusty in week 1. Officiating was sporadic, mostly from missing obvious calls. A good example was the missed helmet-to-helmet targeting by Tulane.

Former OU backup QB Tanner Mordecai threw for seven TDs in SMU’s 56-9 opening game win against Abilene Christian.
Glad to see him shine!
