Dave: Stout Pokies make for an uneasy Bedlam in Norman

by

The game Oklahoma State points to every year to make their season is this Saturday in Norman.

The chance to try and knock off big brother is always their ultimate goal.

Yes, Oklahoma State’s Super Bowl is this week.

Sorry, I mean its Bedlam week.

And the pokies have a pretty stout team this time around. They’re tied for first in the Big 12 in defense for points given up per game.

They’re experienced on both sides of the ball with 19 returning starters.

This is the year that many predicted the Cowboys would have a legitimate shot at the Big 12 Title.

And through half the season they still control their own destiny in terms of being one of the two teams to play in the conference title game.

And Mike Gundy does have a couple of future NFL players on the offensive side of the ball in Chubba Hubbard and Tylen Wallace.

Spencer Sanders at quarterback is solid and even dangerous, that is when he’s not turning the ball over.

However, the OU defense is currently third in the Big 12. And the Sooners once again have the number one scoring offense in the league.

The game being in Norman gives me no comfort. For whatever reason, as of late, the cowboys have given the Sooners fits in Norman, while the games in Stillwater seem to favor the Sooners.

And any home field advantage is watered down even more due to the Covid restrictions that have been put in place this year.

I always feel uneasy about this game, and that is strange considering the overall series record between these teams. And OU has won 15 out of the last 17 contests.

I guess it’s because on the rare occasion that we do lose to the pokies, boy do we hear about it all year from our misguided friends and family who, for whatever reason, were cursed to have allegiances to our little brother to the northeast.

We have to wait another year until we can beat them and set the natural order of things straight again.

The Worry Meter is always going to be high for this game. And the fact that the pokes have a pretty decent team and the Sooners, while getting better every week, do have very young players in important positions, makes it even more concerning.

As such the Worry Meter is at 85% this week.

I hope everyone has a good and safe Thanksgiving holiday! With all that being said….BOOMER!!!
