Dave: Yep, we’re spoiled Sooners, but past success won’t win Big 12 Championship

by

Before the season started a lot of the talk was the Big 12 was catching up with Oklahoma.

The Sooners would be starting their third different quarterback in three seasons, another transfer no less. The defense was getting a new coordinator and a whole new scheme to adjust to.

And the nation’s best offensive line from 2018 would have four new starters for the 2019 campaign.

Besides, texas had just beaten Georgia soundly in the Sugar Bowl so they were, once again, “back”. There was no way Oklahoma could possible win another Big 12 title. Heck, they probably wouldn’t even make it to the Championship game.

But at Oklahoma we don’t rebuild, we reload. And the Sooners once again are in 1st place in the Big 12 standings and will play for their record breaking 5th Big 12 Championship in a row.

Why do we keep doubting the Sooners every year? I include myself in that statement. Since the year 2000 Oklahoma has won 12 out of 19 Big 12 Titles including the last four in a row. The next closest team is texas with three.

Why do we keep doubting the Sooners every year? I include myself in that statement.

And in games where the Big 12 Title was at stake, Oklahoma’s record is 12-1. That’s a phenomenal record of consistency over a 20 year period.

One year, Bob Stoops had to ask wide receiver Paul Thompson to go back to playing quarterback after he had been beaten out for that position, and after starting 3 and 2 they reeled off eight straight wins to capture yet another Big 12 Championship.

We truly are spoiled when it comes to our Sooners. Just ask the fans of those orange teams to the north and south of us.

But all that and $3.00 will buy you a soda and candy bar. Baylor isn’t going to care about OU’s past success.

This Saturday morning the aforementioned Baylor Bears will be standing in Oklahoma’s way of yet another Big 12 title.

Only three weeks away from the first OU/Baylor match-up, one that will be remembered for years to come, the Sooners will have to try and beat the Bears once again to claim the title and possibly get into the College Football Playoff for the fourth time in five years.

It’s always hard to beat someone twice in one season. But we have a few things going for us. We’ve done it before, just two years ago against TCU. We will have Cee Dee for this game; he didn’t play in the first game against Baylor. And maybe Jalen won’t turn the ball over twice, which eventually turned into 14 points for the Bears.

Outside of those turnovers, the Oklahoma defense held Baylor’s offense to 17 points, including shutting them out the entire second half. In fact, that second half was probably the best half of football OU has played this year.

The offense scored 24 points on time consuming drives that kept the Baylor offense off the field and the defense throws in a few three and outs and that lead to the biggest comeback in Sooner history.

Oklahoma won last Saturday’s game against the pokies in much the same way. The offense consumed much of the play clock by running all over the aggies.

The same strategy will probably be needed in Baylor #2. If the Sooners can hold onto the ball and not give Baylor any cheap points, they should win.

If OU gets careless with ball security, they are in trouble. It’s that simple. Oklahoma is the better team. They just have to play to their potential.

So the Worry Meter is at 90% this week due to the high stakes involved. With all that being said….BOOMER!!!
