Dave: Hurts may not be the best QB, but he’s the toughest

by

Once again the Sooners can’t quite seem to string a full game together lately. A miserable first half led to the mother of all comebacks as OU escaped Waco with a 34-31 victory last Saturday night.

As bad as Jalen and everyone played in the first half, they were that much more spectacular in the second. It may have taken Jalen and the offense a half to adjust to not having the services of their No. 1 wide out. CeeDee Lamb was the best player in the stadium and unfortunately was not able to play due to an undisclosed injury.

The offense looked pretty lost without him. The defense was much the same, but they were actually put in a bad situation by the two turnovers Hurts had in the first half.

It all added up to a 21 point half time deficit.

He willed OU to victory  – Hurts was not going to be denied.

And the rest is history.

The greatest comeback in the history of Oklahoma football.

Jalen Hurts might not be the best quarterback skill wise, but he sure as hell is the toughest.

He willed OU to victory. He took hit after hit, whether it was standing in the pocket making the last second throw before getting clobbered or being tackled after a long run to pick up a first down, Hurts was not going to be denied.

And it was fitting that a defense that before Saturday had not created a turnover in five games, ended Baylor’s last chance hopes with an interception.

A forgettable first half turned in to a night to remember.

Moving forward Oklahoma gets yet another prime time kickoff when the TCU Horned Frogs come to town Saturday night (7 pm kickoff; TV: FOX).

The Sooners will face a third tough-as-nails defense in a row. The TCU offense isn’t really that good, but they have one of those quarterbacks that can run and scramble and give a defense fits.

In fact, if you look at them, a good number of TCU’s successful offensive plays have come from the quarterback running for his life and either gaining good yardage on the ground or being flushed out of the pocket and completing passes on the run.

A lot of their offensive success has come from broken plays. It will be a big test for the OU defense and the OU offense.

The kiddie corps of wide receivers stepped up big in the second half against Baylor, but we really need CeeDee back. And we really need to play at a high level for a full 60 minutes.

With a win, the Sooners guarantee themselves a spot in the Big 12 Championship game.

The stakes are high. As such the Worry Meter is at 70% this week.

With all that being said…BOOMER!!!

P.S. Meanwhile, in Austin….The texas longhorns, one of the blue bloods of college football. They spend more money on their football program than almost anyone else in the country. They are deep in the middle of prime recruiting territory. A vast network of alumni and donors for support. Untold resources abound.

As of this past Saturday, the mighty texas longhorn football program has now lost at least FOUR games a season for TEN STRAIGHT YEARS. And in four of those years they have lost SEVEN games….Ahh…It warms the heart.
