In what was his most efficient game thus far in his last year of college football, Jalen Hurts took the No. 6 Oklahoma offense and steam rolled Texas Tech 55-16 in Norman.
Hurts passed for 413 yards (306 yards in the first half alone) and three touchdowns and ran for 70 yards and another score. His total offense numbers (483 yards) now ranks eighth in Sooners’ history.
But player of the game was wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who had a career high of 183 yards receiving for three touchdowns. WRCharleston Rambo wasn’t far behind, with 122 yards receiving on just two catches. Trey Sermon ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
“CeeDee is a great player,” Hurts said. “He’s a baller. He makes plays. What quarterback wouldn’t want a guy like that on his team? I think he made some plays today.”
The Sooners have the nation’s number one offense. They totaled more than 600 yards in every game this year.
“We came out really focused, and I think we took another step, as far as playing a more complete game,” Hurts said in the post-game press conference.
Maybe the important story from Saturday is that it is clear the Sooners’ defense is vastly improved.
The defense held the Red Raiders to 314 yards, including 122 yards passing. Oklahoma has held its past three opponents under 20 points.
No opponent this year has scored on Oklahoma in the first quarter.
OU Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said his defenders are a confident group playing with a lot of effort.
“One of the things we talk about is if we don’t give effort, if we’re not recognized for effort at the University of Oklahoma, then I’m a con man and they’re a fraud,” Grinch said.
The coach’s words were echoed by senior defensive lineman Neville Gallimore.
“That is not something we talk about, it is something that we do. To see all 11 guys fly to the football is big for us.”
Oklahoma became the sixth FBS program to register 900 all-time victories (as recognized by the NCAA). OU has an all-time winning
percentage of .725 (900-325-53).
