Sooners put the Hurts on Bruins 48-14 in return to Rose Bowl stadium

Oklahoma delivered the expected in its return to the Rose Bowl stadium, this time a 48-14 beat down of a disappointing UCLA team whose fans booed their Bruins as the teams left the field at halftime.

On the first play of the game, Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts ran across an open field for 52 yards, setting the tone for a Sooners win that was never in doubt.

Hurts became the first OU quarterback since Jamelle Holieway to pass for 200 yards and run for 100 yards in a half.

To add insult to injury for the Bruins, the Oklahoma fans’ crimson and creme clearly outnumbered Bruins blue in the Rose Bowl stadium’s announced crowd of 52,578.

This was Oklahoma’s first visit to Rose Bowl stadium since the 2018 Rose Bowl overtime loss to Georgia in the college playoffs. Unlike that game, this one was a blow out win for the Sooners before a half filled stadium that had more fans cheering for the visiting team than for the home squad.

The Sooners led 34-7 at halftime and had already amassed 434 yards offense — Hurts himself with three touchdowns and 347 total yards..

Oklahoma’s first punt did not come until midway through the third quarter, when the UCLA defense showed some promise. But it was all for naught by the time the Bruins capitulated early in the fourth quarter when UCLA attempted a field goal from the Oklahoma 18-yard line while trailing by 27 points. The attempt went wide right, emblematic of the Bruin’s season thus far, going 0-3 in non-conference play — a repeat of the 2018 season (which included a loss to the Sooners in Norman).

The Sooners finished with 611 yards total offense.

Hurts finished 15 for 20 for 289 yards passing.

On defense the Sooners again showed improvement, holding UCLA to 311 total yards and just 14 points. Cornerback Tre Brown intercepted a pass in the third quarter. Linebacker Ryan Jones nabbed another in the fourth quarter.

And true freshman Jaden Davis shined with six tackles, leading the team.

With his 1-yard TD rush in the 2nd quarter, CeeDee Lamb became the first OU player since Brandon Daniels (1996-99) to register a TD by rushing, receiving and passing in a career. His lone passing touchdown was against Georgia in the Rose Bowl game.
