Dave: Scary to think mediocre defense all that’s needed for win

by

We as Sooners fans have been spoiled the past several years when it came to quarterback and the offense as a whole.  We enjoyed not one, but two generational quarterbacks back to back.

The two greatest quarterbacks in Oklahoma football history.

Think about that. Names like Mildren, Davis , Lott and Holieway. Not to mention recent greats like Heupel, White and Bradford. All of them would be a back up to Baker or Kyler.

But as much fun as it was to watch those two carve up college football defenses, it was that much more horrifying to witness the total ineptness that OU trotted on the field after every Sooner touchdown.

Had we had even a mediocre defense we would have at least National Title number eight if not nine.

So what can we expect in 2019? It wouldn’t be fair to think Jalen Hurts can replicate what Kyler or Baker did. Or would it?

Was it that Baker and Kyler were that good, or was it that Riley is that much of an offensive genius?

Probably both. It’s not likely that the offense is going to be as good as last year, but I think they will be good enough to score 35 to 45 points on most people.

Problem is we had to score at least 45 to 55 points to beat most teams last year. And those games were still down to the wire. So the issue is going to be if the defense can make up for those 10 to 15 points.

Houston QB D’Eriq King

I keep hearing how Grinch has the defense faster and going after the ball and attacking etc, etc… But I hear that every year.  We won’t know until we see it on the field. And that starts Sunday night when our old friend Dana Holgorsen and his new team the Houston Cougars come to town for the season opener.

This will be a huge test for our so called new defense. Quarterback D’Eriq King leads a loaded Houston offense and is being compared to Kyler Murray.

And Holgorsen knows how to score against OU.

On the upside, Houston’s defense might be worse than ours, if you can imagine that. So basically whichever defense plays even mediocre is going to win..And this scares me.

As such, the Worry Meter is at 85% for this opening weekend.

Let’s hope Jalen and the offense can gel quickly so that maybe the defense doesn’t even have to be mediocre. With all that being said…BOOMER!!!
