Rattler looks the part…but should we be playing football at all?

What a long and strange journey it has been to reach the beginning of an abbreviated season of Sooner Football.

The schedule has lost two of the bigger games of the year in Tennessee and Army. And the remaining games are not guaranteed to be played.

Several teams across the country, including in the Big 12, have had to reschedule and even cancel games due to the current pandemic. I was surprised that they went ahead and planned to play any season at all this year.

The Pac 12 and Big 10 had cancelled their fall seasons with an eye toward maybe playing in the spring. (Although the Big 10 has since changed course and is now set to start October 24 th .) I assumed that the rest of the Power 5 would follow. But I guess they decided there was too much money involved.

A cancelled football season would bring a financial crash to the Sooner Kingdom

I had some idle chat in the check out line Saturday at Walgreens on Main Street.

It was on my first visit to a store since mid-March and of course I had to ask the guy standing six-feet in front of me the question ever on the minds of anyone who lives in Norman:

“You think we’ll have a (Sooner) football season?” I asked.

“Oh, I think we will play. I just don’t know how many people are going to be in the stands,” the man said, as he moved toward the plexi-glas barrier that separated customers fom the check out clerk.  

Then, he turned and said, “We got to play to pay for those other 20 something programs.”

That’s a good point.

Pandemic: A new normal for Sooners and all of college football in 2020

We’re always hearing about the new normal.

We’re also all wondering how the college football season in general, and the University of Oklahoma in particular, will emerge on the other side of the Covid-19 pandemic. What’s their new normal?

Questions are abundant.

How will the sport evolve with canceled spring practices and delayed preseason drills? How about eligibility issues for players who are leveraging their college experience for NFL paydays?

How about the health concerns of late teens and 20-somethings colliding with blood, sweat and tears flying everywhere?
