Dave’s Worry Meter

Dave: Criticism of QB play misplaced

by

Oklahoma went to Columbia, MO a few weeks ago and played well enough to win…for 58 minutes. And
this time it was actually the defense that folded in crunch time allowing the Tigers to escape with a win
on their homefield.

I realize it was the defense that gave the Sooners the lead on a scoop and score, but then with only two minutes left they allowed Missouri to drive the field and tie the game.

After that Jackson Arnold of course made a colossal blunder fumbling the ball allowing Missouri their own scoop and score to take the lead and eventually win the game.

A lot of people are piling on Arnold for that awful play saying that caused us to lose the game. But again, I am laying the blame at the feet of the defense. The defense is supposed to be the strength of this team.

We know the offense has been hampered by injuries to the wide receivers and inexperience in the offensive line all year. Both OU starting quarterbacks have had to run for their lives most of the season. You can’t tell me that they wouldn’t have performed much better this year with a healthy stable of wide receivers and a more experienced O-line.

Dave: Sooner Magic turns out ‘Fool’s Gold’

by

I unfortunately may have found a downside to “Sooner Magic”. And I think the downside is that
sometimes it may provide a false sense of security.

I’m sure after the Auburn game a lot of people ,including myself, felt better about our chances moving forward. We had just gone into our first SEC road game with a true freshman at quarterback and won. Everything is going to be fine!

But when you look closer at that contest, Auburn beat us in almost every statistical category except the scoreboard. Almost 200 more total yards, 15 more first downs, and over 10 more minutes in time of possession. Ifthe Tigers just kept running the ball in the fourth quarter, they most likely win.

But one mistake from the Auburn quarterback and the Sooners come out on top. And again, we start feeling good about our season. But Auburn is not a good team. They are now 2-4 on the year with three home losses.

The Sooner offense could not sustain drives. The defense gave up almost 500 yards of total offense. And after two weeks of feeling good about ourselves, we found out that “Sooner Magic” can sometimes be “Fool’s Gold”.

Dave: Even with help returning, expect a tight game against Vols

by

Looking back on Saturday afternoon, one of the hottest in the stands I can remember, there was
improvement with the offense. Of course, there is still room for a lot more improvement.

The rushing game produced a respectable 182 yards. The concern with that is almost 100 of those yards came from Jackson Arnold. I know that a quarterback run game can be a useful weapon. But if we must continue to rely on Arnold to do the bulk of the rushing, he is going to get his head knocked off one day.

They have to find ways to get the running backs room to roam to help the passing game, which is still
somewhat anemic when compared to recent years.

After three outings, Arnold has yet to crack 200 yards passing in a game. Fingers crossed; help is on the way.

From everything coming out of the Palace on the Prairie this week, I would be surprised if Nic Anderson doesn’t suit up for the big game Saturday night. In fact, he is listed as probable in this week’s injury
