Dave: One extra stop or one turnover puts keys to Bedlam in hands of the defenses

by

Oklahoma bolted out to a 41-7 lead in the early stages of the third quarter against West Virginia in Morgantown a few weeks ago. You would think a 34 point second half lead would be pretty safe.

Well, we just can’t have nice things. Enter the Sooner defense in all its sieve-like glory. Tavon Austin II in the form of Justin Crawford rushed for 334 yards and an eye popping 13.8 yards per carry and all of a sudden West Virginia was within two possessions with over ten minutes left in the game.

The offense came in to save the day with two more touchdowns to win going away. Not much to say about the defense that has not already been said. Just have to outscore opponents.

Easier said than done with a really good pokie team coming to town Saturday morning with a Big 12 Title at stake.

Where the hell did Vegas get OU by 14 points?!?

Now I would think this line goes down as the game approaches because I can see money coming in on the pukes at that number. This game will be decided by s

Bedlam sets up as the defacto Big 12 championship game in Norman

Coach Bob Stoops told his Sooners in the locker room in Morgantown the news:

Next week the Sooners will play for the Big 12 championship in a defacto championship game for the first time in Norman.

Oklahoma has won nine Big 12 championships. It’s just turned out those championship games were not played on Owen Field.

It was blustery on Saturday night. Snow began falling heavily after the players warm up and continued on and off throughout the game. That did not hurt the Sooners, who disposed of the Mountaineers 56-28. OU (9-2 overall, 8-0 in Big 12) remains alive for its first undefeated Big 12 season since 2004. The Sooners also had unbeaten Big 12 regular seasons in 2000 and 2003.

The Bedlam game on December 3 (kickoff will be at either 11 am or 2:30 pm) will be the conference championship game this year. But, next year the Big 12 Conference championship game will return at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, after a six-year hiatus.

Standing in the way of the Sooners’ 10th conference title in 18 seasons under Stoops is intrastate rival Oklahoma State (9-2, 7-1). Stoops is 13-4 all-time against the Cowboys.

Sooners butt kick Bedlam, win Big 12 championship and likely playoff berth

Oklahoma won the Big 12 championship on Saturday and it wasn’t even close. The No. 5 Sooners manhandled the No. 9 Cowboys 58-23.

Baker Mayfield three two TD passes and ran for another. An average day for the once walk-on QB for the Sooners.

But there was a big-time atmosphere in the air — with ESPN College Gameday set up on campus and the nation’s attention on Bedlam, which this year was the defacto Big 12 conference championship game.

Jordan Thomas, who intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown, said. “Obviously, this game — we don’t need anyone to tell us it’s a big game. We don’t need anyone to tell us that it’s a game we have to play our hearts out in. But this one? I could tell. I knew our guys were ready and I knew what we were playing for.”

After the game, Coach Bob Stoops said he hadn’t heard that Notre Dame lost to Stanford. Notre Dame was the only other team anticipated to perhaps challenge Oklahoma for one of the four playoff seeds, even though the Sooners were elevated to the No. 3 spot by the CFP committee last week. The Irish lost to Stanford.

“You just figure if you’re third and you go to a championship game away from home to the No. 9 team in the country and win by 30-some points, whatever it was, you would only move up, possibly, but you sure wouldn’t move back,” Stoops said.
