Sooners dial up Mayfield-Westbrook connection for 38-17 win over Wildcats

by

It was another Dede Westbrook/Baker Mayfield show in the Sooners’ 38-17 win over Kansas State.

Mayfield completed 25 of 31 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns.  Westbrook had nine catches for 184 yards and three scores.

This came a week after Mayfield threw for 390 yards against Texas and Westbrook set school record with 232 yards receiving.

Although the Sooners had a 14-point lead late in the fourth quarter, fans were still uneasy. Then offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley called an “enough of this already” play — dialing up an 88 yard touchdown pass from Mayfield to Westbrook and the game was over. It was the longest pass play at home and fourth-longest overall in Oklahoma history — in the fourth quarter.  It was Westbrook’s eighth TD in the last three games, a new school record.

“Two talented guys,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said. “Of course, Baker’s just great. I’m just looking at 25 out of 31 — that’s a great day against a good defense. And then Dede’s just got that speed and polish in his route running to get open.”

Samaje Perine was injured in the first quarter and did not play afterward. But exciting RB Joe Mixon rushed for 88 yards, caught three passes for 34 yards and a touchdown and became the first Sooners running back since Joe Washington in 1973 to throw a touchdown pass. The 26-yarder to Westbrook in the second quarter put the Sooners ahead 21-7.

A week after squeeking by Texas, Sooners face a tougher Kansas State

Any win over the longhorns is cause for celebration because of the history and tradition of the rivalry. Saturday’s victory was also as frustrating as all get out.

The Sooners turned a 30-point blowout into a 5-point last play of the game squeeker.

Four turnovers will do that. Although it was really three turnovers. I’m not counting the interception where our receiver was tackled by two longhorns while running his route.

I really try to believe that officials aren’t out to sway a game one way or the other. But that was getting a little ridiculous Saturday.

But again it was a win over texas and you never take that for granted. And to do it while losing several key players on defense to injury makes it that much more gratifying.
