Sooners topple Rocky, shuts up the SEC (again) 31-24 in OT

by

>>>HUNTER’S OU-TENN REPORT CARD
Maybe the only thing matching the exhilaration of Sooner Magic appearing in Knoxville is the satisfaction of shutting up the S-E-C chanters.

Both happened Saturday night when No. 19 Oklahoma came from a 17-point deficit to defeat the No. 23 Tennessee Volunteers 31-24 in double overtime.

Baker Mayfield threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard in the second overtime.

For Coach Bob Stoops it was reminiscent of the Sooners’ 35-31 triumph over Texas A&M during the Sooners’ 2000 national championship season.

“It’s one of the more special wins, maybe my favorite of all of them,” Stoops said. “A little Sooner magic came back out. It reminded me of maybe like we’re back at A&M back in 2000, where we made some plays to win the game that you feel pretty fortunate and blessed to make.”

Mayfield sets school passing mark in 41-3 win over Akron

by

After a sluggish start, the Sooners seemed to uncork the Lincoln Riley “Air Raid” offense after the first quarter and went on to handily defeat Akron 41-3 on Saturday night.

The Sooners punted four times and picked up only three first downs — one of which came on a penalty — in the first quarter.

But then, QB Baker Mayfield went on to set a 388 yard school record for a debut. Maybe more important statistics were: 33 passing attempts, 3 touchdowns and NO interceptions.

The game also showed that Joe Mixon is the real deal. The Sooners never got their run game going, as the Zips concentrated on stopping the run. Samaje Perine led all RBs with only —- yards. Run blocking failures by the Oklahoma offensive line is a concern, especially when such will be needed next week at Tennessee.

But, the passing game showed how well Mayfield fits into the plan. A wheel route pass to Mixon for a 76 yard touchdown was splendidly performed.

Mayfield connected on 10 of 12 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in the third quarter.

“It’s pretty exciting for me, but I’ve got to move on,” he said. “It could have been better, when you think about the first five drives. We didn’t get any yards. We’ve just got to capitalize and get better.”

Offense: B. A slow start from the offensive line. Need to run block better to have a chance next week against Tennessee. Wide receivers were great. Baker Mayfield looked good for his first game.

Baker Mayfield named starting QB

by

Has there ever been a quarterback win a starting job after arriving as a walk-on at two different FBS schools?

There has now. Baker Mayfield is the guy.

Mayfield was named the new starting QB for the Sooners, edging out last year’s start Trevor Knight and sophomore Cody Thomas.

Coach Bob Stoops called Mayfield “an excellent leader, highly competitive, good delivery.” Stoops refused to reveal what set Mayfield apart from Knight and Thomas, except to say he brought the consistency the coaches were looking for from their quarterback.

Offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley said he made the decision over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Mayfield didn’t know about the decision until called into the coaches office on Monday.
