Better to temper season optimism in August

August is usually the best part of the college football season.

New recruits bring hope of being future stars. Coaches are upbeat. Two-a-day practices are about to start. Sports writers are predicting great victories.

Everyone is undefeated.

Even the thought of cool fall evenings at the stadium provides a brief respite from the reality of those 100-degree temps outside.

But six years ago this week, some of that “good feel” was seriously deflated when Oklahoma’s 2006 season was turned on its head before it even started.

That was when Coach Bob Stoops dismissed starting QB Rhett Bomar for Big Red Imports-gate.

Whaley cleared to lead Sooner run game

Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops said Monday that running back Dominique Whaley has been cleared by doctors to participate in full workouts and appears on track to return from a broken ankle that ended his season in 2011.

But how effective Whaley may be is a wait and see issue.

“He’s been cleared to do everything,” Stoops said. “So, he’s out there running and training and I’m not able to work with him, so it’s a little bit tough.”

“I don’t think Dom even knows until you get the pads on and make that sudden cut. … He says he feels really good and he’s working well.”

“Until you get out there, it’s kind of hard to say,” Stoops said.
