Dave: Injuries raise questions about O-line play but defense is dominating

by

One would think a 51-3 drubbing would not be cause for any source of worry about the victorious team, no matter who the opponent.

But a big concern for Oklahoma going into the season reared its ugly head last Friday night on Owen Field.  While the Sooners did indeed dismantle Temple to the tune of 51-3, the offensive line left more questions than answers.

To be fair, Oklahoma was missing starting tackle Jake Taylor due to injury, and starting center Branson Hickman left with injury after just 10 snaps.  Depth was also an issue as guard Troy Everett was a no go with injury as well.

So maybe we should not expect many answers until this unit heals and is able to work together at full strength.  But injuries are part of the game.  Next man up so to speak.

So, it was disappointing to see the offensive line look so inconsistent.  I know that might sound overly critical when OU still rushed for 220 yards and averaged 6.1 yards a carry.  But the Sooners were also 1 for 12 on 3rd down conversion attempts, they lost the time of possession battle, and Arnold only threw for 140 yards and was sacked 3 times.

Dave: SEC gets us a lot of attention

by

We are again on the precipice of another glorious season of Oklahoma Football.

Only this time it’s different. A new conference. The big bad SEC. The toughest and greatest conference in all the land. Or so we’ve been told the last 20 years by ESpin.

“It just means more”…or something like that.

I get that they are promoting their brand, and ESPN is as well due to the large amounts of money they have spent on the TV rights for the conference.

But didn’t you all get sick of the constant line they were pushing? That the SEC was so much better than all the other conferences? I agreed with Bob Stoops when he said that the SEC was a top-heavy conference just like several other conferences.

They just so happened to receive a lot of attention because Alabama went on an historic streak of National Titles during that time. It’s not like Mississippi State won those titles too.

They would have said the same thing about the Big 12 if OU had won 3 or 4 titles in that span or the Big 10 had Michigan went on a hot streak.

And remember, Bob Stoops was 7-4 versus SEC teams, including 3-0 against vaunted Alabama.

This schedule is a lot to handle
I’m not saying the SEC doesn’t have access to very talented players in the southeastern part of the United States, which has very fertile recruiting grounds. But it’s not like other conferences are throwing out converted rugby players they had to find at the local YMCA. They recruit just has hard, and these days recruiting is a nationwide endeavor.

I will say that as of the past few years, the SEC has grown at the top with Georgia knocking off Alabama to become the leader of the pack, and Tennessee is coming on strong. Ole Miss and Missouri are also making waves.

Dave: Sooners need to take their new-found consistency to Provo

Will the real Oklahoma Sooners please stand up?

After 2 road games in which Oklahoma played like it was, well…. last year, the Sooners ran a decent West Virginia team off the field Saturday night to the tune of 59-20.

Everything clicked against the Mountaineers in a contest that Brent Venables called probably their most complete game of the season. They truly played complimentary football.

After the defense let West Virginia roll down the field to score a touchdown on their opening drive while
averaging over nine yards a play, they shut the door. The rest of the game the Mountaineers struggled
gaining four yards a play and making only four third-down conversions.
